THE STROKES "is this it?" cd,2001.
debut set by Albert Hammond's son and Co...
not bad indi rock here IMO, but i certainly dont call it a classic like Rolling Stone does, this one has my favourite Strokes trackof all time on it in "last nite", and its the only one of theirs i truly love!.
different tracklisting here from the US version...this one released worldwide has a track calle "new york city cops", which isnt really flattering of those guys and was dumped from the album for US release following the 9/11 attacks(the album was released a week later).
all up, not a bad album, probably my favourite of theirs.

THE SHINS "port of morrow" cd,2012. #3 US, #11 UK
the shins fourth album, my first, and one of the last recommendations i got from Corey....
i guess the easiest way to describe this one is Modest Mouse maybe?, lots of different pop sounds here, from 70s soft rock, through 80s pop, alt pop and a splash of indi rock.
nice sounds, nice vocals and pretty good lyrical content, still, nothing great on here, but neither is there anything so bad i do not like either, just an all-round good collection of modern indi/alt sounds.

JACK WHITE "blunderbuss" cd,2012. #1 AU, #1 UK, #1 US, #1 CAN
2011 was a bad year for Jack...breakup of The White Stripes and divorce from Meg(other member of TWS)...
so what i expected of 'blunderbuss' was quite correct...an album of vented anger and frustration, probably also uncertainty as to where he would go next...
and this album is full of those things, strange to note thae ex-wife Meg does make several appearances on this album(maybe they were destined to be White Stripes tracks?, who knows?
look, i find that you either like or dislike the disjointed,non-conformity of his music..i like it...reminds me a lot of Neil Young and Paul Weller in that respect...
the guy is a living musical legend IMO, always willing to step outside the box(not sure if he ever was in a box, again, like Bob Dylan in that respect)
as with every album he(and Meg) have made, there are always a couple of tracks that i cannot get my head around no matter how hard i may try(is that a sign of genius?)
either way, if you like what The White Stripes did and achieved in their career, then you'll really like this one like me, if you dont, well, you wont, aint no two ways about it!

THE CHURCH "the blurred crusade" cd,1982. #10 AU.
second album by these grossly underrated aussie guys...
apart from this album and maybe one or two others they didnt really make much impact on the charts here, more of a cult following....but they still release albums(their last one was a couple of years ago) and they still tour this country on an annual basis, sometimes as a band, and sometimes acoustically, and they still get rave reviews for their shows!
this album is sort of a mix between new wave, psychadelia and bits of prog rock type sounds,
these guys should have been huge worldwide but like Nick Cave chose to do their own thing and not succumb to the pressures of record company executives to 'make it big'.
they are now highly regarded in the industry here as 'living legends' but without the chart success to show for it!

Howard's second album, after his debut went #1 in England. This one fared almot as well, going to #2 there, and the
only one to crack the top 10 here in the states. Five singles released from here so something had to click. They all
did over there, but only Things Can Only Get Better and No One Is To Blame here. The latter is my only love track,
but there were four that did nothing for me, probably the synthesizer, which I can only take in small doses. Thought
the album would come out better going in, but it does get a like, with not much room to spare. Different track
listing between the UK and US releases, with Specialty and Why Look For The Key replaced by Like To Get To Know You
Well and Bounce Right Back on my copy. The cd release has all of those.

Like to Get to Know You Well is my favorite Howard Jones song. I think I only have a Greatest Hits album of his though on CD somewhere...

ELVIS COSTELLO "spike,the beloved entertainer" cd,1989. #5 UK, #28 AU, #32 US
dear oh dear...an Elvis disaster(well, ok my most other artists standards, but not his!)...
best known track is the average 'veronica' co-written with Paul McCartney, one of the leftovers from Macca's 'flowers in the dirt' album from the same year.
this album is simply not coherent with any central theme like is the usual with Elvis' albums...just seems to be tracks of different styles all over the place in both music and lyrics, he must have had a bad time trying to get motivated for this one as it was almost three years since his brilliant 'king of america' album hit the charts.
'veronica' was not a real hit anywhere neither, just scraping into the US/AU top 20, and top 40 in the UK...dissapointing by his chart success, especially in the UK.
not a real good place to start looking at his career especially when there are four tracks on it which are attrocious(even for me,and i love the guy!), two classic Costello ones though which could have been put on any album at anytime...good job they were on this one or the rating would reflect 'do not like'!
and whats with that stupid 'chewing gum' song....terrible song, even worse title...it really lost its flavour on me,should have kept it stuck to the bedpost forever!, and dont get me started on that other stupid title 'pads, paws and claws'...what the heck was he thinking???
also includes(if my memory serves me correct...) the only instrumental Elvis has released on an album in 'miss macbeth'...a lovely piece of music featuring brass, percussion and double bass.

LINKIN PARK "a thousand suns" cd,2010.
linkin's fifth album, and fourth one i own...i love these guys!
had it have been one of their earlier albums this would have gone in the 'metal' thread...but these guys have mellowed out a bit over the years...
not so much of the metal sounds, nor the screaming vocals and rap. just well thought out brooding, moody tracks for the most part.
lyrically, one of the best bands out there in my opinion, always have something intelligent to say on the darkest, deepest depressive thoughts from the human mind, songs of hopelessness, dispair and angst ridden pain abound.
i guess the biggest surprise here for me is that they actually do a complete acoustic track here in "the messenger"...which could almost be called a ballad.
fans all over the world are divided over this album, some wanted a return to their original sound, others, like me, like the way they have matured with age over the last decade.
allmusic dont rate this one highly, giving it a converted score of 1.5, a bit harsh IMO, but them's the breaks!
