What Are You Listening To?
I love this band...so far ahead of their time !

THE CHURCH "the blurred crusade" cd,1982. #10 AU.

second album by these grossly underrated aussie guys...
apart from this album and maybe one or two others they didnt really make much impact on the charts here, more of a cult following....but they still release albums(their last one was a couple of years ago) and they still tour this country on an annual basis, sometimes as a band, and sometimes acoustically, and they still get rave reviews for their shows!
this album is sort of a mix between new wave, psychadelia and bits of prog rock type sounds,
these guys should have been huge worldwide but like Nick Cave chose to do their own thing and not succumb to the pressures of record company executives to 'make it big'.
they are now highly regarded in the industry here as 'living legends' but without the chart success to show for it!

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

Howard's second album, after his debut went #1 in England. This one fared almot as well, going to #2 there, and the
only one to crack the top 10 here in the states. Five singles released from here so something had to click. They all
did over there, but only Things Can Only Get Better and No One Is To Blame here. The latter is my only love track,
but there were four that did nothing for me, probably the synthesizer, which I can only take in small doses. Thought
the album would come out better going in, but it does get a like, with not much room to spare. Different track
listing between the UK and US releases, with Specialty and Why Look For The Key replaced by Like To Get To Know You
Well and Bounce Right Back on my copy. The cd release has all of those.

JOE JACKSON "laughter and lust" cd,1991. #39 AU, #41 UK, #116 US.

i still cant decide whether i like JJ or not...he has some very good songs, but also, some downright aweful ones...but thats just his studio albums(rarely consistant IMO)
and this one is no different, three great tracks and four bad ones IMO.
back to his roots with this one...piano based pop with a hint of sarcasm(best way to describe his style)
he tells some pretty good stories at times(yeh, i call them stories, not songs!),often they are his take on relationships and life done in a wacky/kooky way.
well past his chart used-by date by 1991, but still able to deliver the goods spazmodically, not a bad album, can take it or leave it either way.
cant recall why i actually bought this one, must have been something on the radio i liked a lot at the time...or maybe it was in a discount bin somewhere?

worst track: obvious song
best track: its all too much

IT'S ALL TOO MUCH (lyrics)

Some days I can't get started
Wondering which shoe to put on first
Or should I brush my teeth
Before or after I put on my shirt
So many big decisions
Boiled or scrambled, fried or even raw
I'm so damn open-minded
Used to think I'm lucky but I'm cursed

I hate this supermarket
But I have to say it makes me think
A hundred mineral waters
It's fun to guess which ones are safe to drink
Two hundred brands of cookies
87 kinds of chocolate chip
They say that choice is freedom
I'm so free it drives me to the brink

And you know why - it's all too much

It's all too much for me to bear
What kind of shampoo suits my hair
It's all too much to struggle thru
Especially without you
Won't you please come home
Honey please come home

I read the morning paper
But it all changes by the evening news
The world got so much smaller
I don't know which piece of it to choose
I'd like to fight apartheid
Wish that I could fight the guy upstairs
I'd solve a dozen cases
If only there weren't so many clues

What shall we do this evening
Send out for some sushi and champagne
Stay in and watch tv
50 channels can't all be the same
Maybe go to a movie
50 films on 50 tiny screens
They say that choice is freedom
I'm so free it's driving me insane

And you know why - it's all too much

It's all too much for me to stand
So much supply and no demand
There's just too much for me to do
Especially without you
Won't you please come home
Honey please come home

I'd like to get to know
All the many people I could be
If I just had the time
I'm sure I could find out which one is me
Maybe I need religion
Or meditation 'til I disappear
They say that choice is freedom
I'm so free I'm stuck in therapy

And you know why - it's all too much

It's all too much for me to take
Try to be real, feel like a fake
It's all too much to follow thru
Especially without you
Honey please come home
Won't you please come home

A little synth heavy in parts for me, but I can handle it. The bands third album and the first to chart in the
states, even though a low #94. The Brits were on top of it though at #7. Think I went back and picked up the
previous one after hearing this, based on the opening track here, Love Vigilantes. Love that but nothing else meets
it. Thought that was a single but it only shows The Perfect Kiss and Sub-culture. They missed the boat on that one.
Not that those aren't decent tracks, only seeing action on the dance charts here. One instrumental in the eight
tracks which is a waste. It was featured in some short film that was Oscar nominated so at least some use was made
of it. That's the only track I don't like. Don't have any of their albums other than those two. Did I miss anything?

BAND OF HORSES "mirage rock" cd,2012.

after a week of old albums(60s and 70s mostly) i thought should deliberately pick out something newish, the only one i knew was newish and where it was, was this one, the newly released Band Of Horses one...
man, i love these guys, i only have two of their four albums, this one and infinate arms, loved that one, this one is borderline love already, after only two or three listens...
yeh, its new, but it still has the feel of old rock and roll to me, can hear bits of CCR,Neil Young,Eagles,Stones,CS&N, Buffalo Springfield here...not surprising really as these guys were influenced innitially by Neil Young(thus their name, a take on Crazy Horse).
lots of lovely harmonies and melodies on here, very radio friendly compared to their last album, im still not too keen on the first single 'knock, knock', but its still ok in the scheme of things...favoruite track here is the beautiful acoustic 'long vows'...so much like Neil Young's acoustic material its scary, almost doing NY better than NY(or jimmy fallon LOL)...
all-up, very very good album that should really break these guys into mainstream rock and get lots and lots of airplay with these tracks.
