M.I.A. is a she, not a band. She's okay.
I prefer the other M.I.A., Michaela Grobelny. She's a German DJ, artist and record label owner.

i just started getting into her recently recently and my friends told me the band was M.I.A. and the girls name was kala

Ah, well your friends are wrong on two counts. M.I.A.'s real name is Maya Arulpragasam and Kala is the title of her second album.
She is good. If you like Paperplanes I recommend both of her albums. There's also a mixtape out there that she did with Diplo called Piracy Funds Terrorism.

It's sad that M.I.A. isn't even in the rap section, since most kids who hear something other than a bassline, a violin sample, and a canned over compressed beat in a contemporary rap song are like "the hell?!"

I do consider her more of a rap artist myself. But she incorporates so many other styles into her sound that the rap world might not know what to do with her.

I don't think she would be in the rap category. You should check out the Slumdog Millionare soundtrack if you like her stuff! (Paper airplanes is a good song!)

Paper planes is a good song. About the only good song from M.I.A that I am aware of.
