GREAT LAKE SWIMMERS "new wild everywhere" cd,2012.

one of my 'end of year' purchases for 2012...
pretty sure Music Head picked this one up also from his list...
this is the fifth album from these guys from Ontario,Canada...never heard of them until MH did this album as anew release back in the first half of 2012...
bit folky,bit alt/folk,bit alt/pop(light pop anyway?!)...
again, cant bbe arsed doing the whole thing here, but two of the thirteen tracks still dont cut it for me("parkdale blues", and "on the water"), the rest are good, but not what i'd call great tracks, all up, a reasonably good album of consistant songs....rating for the album from me here is 1.8

LINKIN PARK "meteora" cd,2003.

follow up to their multi million selling debut set 'hybrid theory'...
still following the same formula of light electronic sounds and mellow vocals offset with full on metal riffs and rap...
these guys lyrics are always intelligent and thought out very well, mainly dealing with isolation both within society and internally with depression...
i have three of their five albums, their debut is still the best IMO but love this album and love these guys
twelve tracks on the album, six loves, five likes and one dislike gives an overall score of 2.4, therefore

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

MY MORNING JACKET "at dawn" cd,2001.

Louisville,Kentucky's finest band IMO...
still underrated, still dont sell in quantities they deserve, but more importantly still releasing albums...i guess they have a forgiving record company to deal with...
not their best album but still likeable IMO with eleven likes and two dislikes on it giving a score of 1.8,
again, cant be bothered listing all the tracks but will provide links to a couple of tracks i like on it..

PSYCHE "babylon deluxe" cd, 2003

electro-synth outfit from Canada...
releasing their first album in 1983,only gaining success in Germany at the time so the guys relocated there...this is their umpteenth album and the only one i own...
the sound here is still distinctively still set with the early 1980s sound of artists like Depeche Mode, especially on my favourite track "gods and monsters"...also slight resemblances to Pet Shop Boys,Visage and do a lesser degree Soft Cell..therefore i guess you get the gist of what these guys sound like...i grew up with those other artists so i guess im in sync with these sounds and rightly so, i like this album....and good job the only link available is an audio track of my favourite

THE WHITE STRIPES "elephant" cd,2003.

since ive been here at MD i have posted all of their albums, bar this one...which is now!
have them all including Jack's solo album from last year.
the problem i still have whilst listening to these guys is that while i am listening i like the songs, but when i think about them later i think "what the heck was that all about?"..then i start thinking, "well, that was a load of mumbo jumbo noise!"...so i still cant figure them out, but are we supposed to?
my scores go on what i am listening to at the time, and not hindsight, otherwise i would no doubt not like most of their stuff...does that sound confusing?...well, it does to me.
lots of their trademark riffs and beats here, two tracks that i genuinely love even when i think about these guys are "seven nation army" and "the hardest button to button", if you guys havent ever seen the video to the "button" track, then you should...if youre like me, youll love it,awesome stuff.
there is always a surprise cover or two on each WS album, this one is no different...a cover of David/Bacharach's "i just dont know what to do with myself"...Jack singlehandedly turns it from a lovely soulful song into a mournful, pleading song of desperation which is why i give it "***" here, and thats the thing i like about Jack White i guess, he is always reinventing the wheel(metaphorically speaking),which is why he will still be successful in 20,30, or even 40 years time.

JASON COLLETT "reckon" cd,2012

another from my stack of 2012 purchases..
reviewed this as a new release last year, liked what i heard and bought it...
Jason is a Canadian from Toronto, this is his fourth solo set,was previously in a band called Broken Social Scene but ive never heard of them?!?
the music here is a bit folky, bit alt folk also...the songs lyrics are mainly politically, socially aware type stuff, but there are also several sort of lighthearted things in here also.
the album contains fifteen tracks, but when i eventually got it it also contained a bonus disc called 'essential james collett' which contains a further eleven tracks culled from his back catalogue...great idea IMO, sort of gives new listeners like myself a chance to hear what else he has done in the past without having to research or purchase other material of his blindly...i think more artists should do this sort of thing as everyone wins...ie: the consumer, and the artist, 10/10 for effort and invention James!

JASON COLLETT "reckon:essential jason collett" cd,2012

thought i'd post the bonus disc also...
this one is posted upon a first up listen, so some of these 'essential cuts' may or may not grow on me over time...
overall, not a bad disc, but not as good as his 'reckon' album, but like i said previously...this sort of thing is a good way for artists to get their other material out there for the newcomers. there is a cover version of Paul McCartney's "everynight" on this one which isnt too bad neither.

THIRSTY MERC "thirsty merc" cd, 2005

Aussie group Merc's debut set,
this album was released with two different covers here...not sure why as the track listings are exactly the same??, i have the cover on the right.
alt rock sounds here, songs mostly themed on those of late teen, early twenty-somethings...
nothing on here i dont like, but some of the like songs did get the benefit of the doubt as i couldnt decide whether i liked them or not...
five singles off this one,Tracks 1,2,5,6 and 14, "someday, someday" was the highest placed single here reaching #19, on the other side of the Tasmanian Strait in New Zealand "in the summertime" reached #12, that is my favourite one on here...
album only reached #15 on the charts here but did get a double platinum award...
saw these guys play support to Meatloaf last year, they were pretty good, but compared to Meat, they were brilliant LOL
