just wondering if anyone knows
multi-disc cd's are released all the time
Is it possible to have data recorded on both sides of a cd?
why not?

CD's and DVD's only have one side, not two. When a CD or DVD is made small holes are etched into the surface on one side. When a dual layer DVD or CD is made the second album or DVD is etched into the spaces between the previously etched holes but at a deeper layer. So the laser is told to read the data at level one depth or level two depth. I used to work for Intel and the technology being used to create chips etc etc is now at the atomic level. It's quite amazing what we can do with data and data processing units these days.
That's not to say we won't see discs that can be turned over in the future??!!??
I see you are having a 'lightbulb' moment MH.
All of which reminds me of the story of a husband and wife watching a Formula One race many years ago.
The wife said ' Why are they swerving around all over the place before the race even starts?'
To which the husband replied, rather impatiently, 'They're warming up the tires woman'
Her reply - 'That's stupid - they should warm the tires up before they go onto the track!'
Her husband built a prototype tyre warmer that very same day in their garage and sold the company on a few years later for a couple of million.............
You might have something there MH!

If they wanted to-yes. Obviously some financial reason as to why they don't. Remember the underlying plastic comes from oil companies!

oh come on now
so you're telling me a possible reason for not producing 2 sided cd's could be a conspiracy with oil companies to enable them to produce more plastic cd's?

No of course not - that was meant in jest. But the technology for creating double sided discs exists. Therefore the only reason they don't must be an economic one. It's certainly not due to technical limitations.

This got me thinking - I knew I had one disc somewhere with DVD on one side and something on the other. Sure as shit - I found it! Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells II and III live. II on one side and III on the other. Plus I have a number of music software discs with data on both sides so I guess they're either just lazy or they want you to buy more discs??!!?? 99% of my discs are one sided - forgot I had this TB one. If I remember correctly Fleetwood Mac's 'The Dance' DVD is also double-sided as opposed to being 'dual layer'. Will have to check - will just take a long time to find in the mess that is my album collection. (it's all over the house)
