What Are You Listening To?

THE HOLY SOUL "damn you,ra" cd,2009.

i didnt know until a few minutes ago that guys were from Australia, but it makes a lot of sense as it appears that Nick Cave, and moreso Grinderman are a big influence on their music as it shows thoughout, especially in the first half of the tracks contained within...
this si their second album, since then they have apparently released two live albums and a compilation album...i cannot find anything anywhere to suggest they troubled the charts at all with any releases...
not a bad album, cant recall where i picked up this one but my guess is a discount bin at Corey's sometime ago...
also, was worried if any links would be available for this album, luckily i found one(not my favourite), but another one i like...

Looks like there is a volume 1, which I don't have. Both volumes were recorded at the same
time, but this one was released four months later. One of those marketing things I guess.
Didn't work, as this one performed worse than the first, only making #66 here and #69 in the
UK. Once again good grunge/punk band for me. It says the 2 volumes are a concept album about
Art Alexakis's love life or some such crap. In his head alone. Singles were When It All Goes
Wrong Again, Out Of My Depth and Rock Star, none of which hit the overall chart. Two of those
get a love score from me but my fav goes to the closer.

don't have it but when I heard it back a few years ago (whenever it came out)
I remember thinking it had a strong potential for growth
it was so laid back wasn't it?
anyway, I never followed up on it

Fell in love with these guys with the 2010 release, Infinite Arms. Loved it enough to back
track one, which was this 2007 second release. Don't think it measures up to that third one yet
but it might someday. It's early in it's life on my shelf. The band was formed in Seattle in
2004. After the release of their debut, lead man Ben Bridwell decided to move the band to his
native South Carolina. After the lengthy touring for the first album he wanted a family to
return to. Nice logic to me. Since this release the band has expanded to a six piece, which
would explain the fuller sound on the next album. The additional members were actually
recruited when they toured for this. There were two singles released (Is There A Ghost?, No
One's Gonna Love You), neither hitting the chart here, with the album peaking with its debut,
at #35. Two loves for me with the second single and The General Specific. Nothing I don't like
and didn't score the less than a minute Lamb On The Lam.

Yeah my husband put it in my iPod and it came up on shuffle enough times that just started to dig it and listened to the whole album today.

back to Band Of Horses...i dont have that one you posted MH...but i have the other three studio albums, liking them all, like you, fell in love with "infinate arms", then back tracked to their debut set, then obviously the latest release...
as a footnote, Tem and Corey both told me that in thier opinions that "cease to begin" is their weakest album???, that doenst mean i wont get it at some point because i will.

The last of my 4 album Everclear collection. A low like for this one, not loving anything on
it, and 2 losers. This is the bands sixth album. I am missing 1 and 5, and don't see any other
purchases on the horizon unless they show up in a discount bin somewhere. Still I rate them a
pretty decent band up to this point. Bassist and drummer left the band after this and there
have only been two albums since. Singles from here were tracks 4 and 11. Looks like Capitol
dropped them after this one which peaked on it's debut, at #33, with neither of the singles
charting. There's even a video of the Soccer Mom single on this disc. Wonder if I'll ever watch it.

HOODOO GURU'S "stoneage romeos" cd, 1982 #29 AU

studio albums 9
live albums 1
compilation albums 6
singles/eps 35

debut set from these Sydney-siders....
these guys were originally part of an underground music movemant called "swamp music"...i have no idea where that genre hails from or even what it means, would have thought though that would be an ideal name for a genre for bands that come from Louisianna or Florida??!!
some, dare i say it, pre-grunge rock sounds on here, along with catchy rock songs and a ballad or two...
four tracks lifted as singles here(tracks 2,6,8 and 9), the biggest seller here was the ballad "my girl", which incidently is about lead vocalist Dave Faulkner's pet greyhound?!
i was aware that the cover art was different for the US release of this, but wasnt aware until now that the tracks were listed in a differnet order to those here, and the US version also contains an extra track...strange stuff indeed...
these guys were extremely popular amongst college student in the US, with this one reaching #1 on the College music charts(as did a few of their following albums), just a shame these guys never made it big anywhere but here as they ended up releasing a number of hugely successful catchy radio pop/rock singles, and i rate them as one of the most consistant band to emerge from these shores
