What Are You Listening To?

THE GOOD,THE BAD AND THE QUEEN "the good, the bad and the queen" cd, 2007.

another of Blur's Damien Albarn's side projects....
guess you cant accuse the guy of staying in 'britpop' mode for his whole career....
i initially bought this one expecting a whole lot more than it turned out to be simply because not only was the Blur frontman on it, bt also Paul Simonon(the clash) and Paul Trogg(the verve) played a big part also...i should have known better as so called 'super groups' rarely achieve what they set out to de(noteable exceptions being Travelling Willbury's and CSN/CSNY IMO)...
for the most part this has a very sparse electronic feel similar to Portishead and i dont like those guys much, but there are a few little gems on here that are in similar vein to the quieter, cheeky, cockney moments of Small Faces album tracks, other than that, this is another big dissapointment from Albarn!

TRAVIS "the man who", cd 1999. #1 UK, #8 AU, #135 US

Britpop band Travis' second album and only one i own, they have six with one on the way this year....
just a lovely bunch of light dreamy pop/pop vocals and sweet melodies also...
light jingle-jangle guitar sounds which really were the true sound of britpop...
there must have been some rivalry between the band and Oasis at the time as they have a little dig at the Gallaghers on the opening track with the line "and whats a wonderwall anyway?"...
this album contains their best songs also in "driftwood" and "why does it always rain on me"(which incidently was their only hit outside of the UK reaching #10 there, #11 here and #35 on the US alternative charts...)
had three other UK hits from this one with "writing to reach you" #14, "driftwood" #13, and "turn" #8...
all up a pleasant album of well crafted pop songs IMO

SLEEPERCAR "west texas" cd, 2008

debut set from Sparta's Jim ward's side project...
lots of alt country/americana sounds happening here, but nothing that really grabs my attention fully, just an album of okay tracks with a couple of duds thrown in...
it does does a pass mark from me, but this album is really not my cup or tea, thank you!

The groups third album and the only one I have. Didn't realize this album was as big as it was.
Went to #'s 1,2,3,4 in the only four countries that matter, as far as music is concerned. It
didn't score as well as I expected, with only 2 love tracks to 3 do not like's. Don't think
I've heard anything from the band prior to this release. Probably picked it up on the strength
of that Arms Race track, love it. It says those previous albums had a more punk feel than this
does. Horns, violins and pianos are added to this one. Arms Race was the first single and hit
#2 here. The group just came out with a new album. Love the first single.

JIM JAMES "regions of light and sound of God" cd,2013.

debut solo set from the voice behind My Morning Jacket....
its similar yet different from his band's material...similar in the melodies, sparseness, and harmonies, yet different in that there are more strings and orchestrations here...
recorded at his home studio in Louisville,Kentucky....
look, MMJ fans will like it but if youre not one of those(i am), then you may find it hard to get into it fully(youre either with these guys or youre not,its that simple!)

I've been avoiding this band, I'm not sure why. Anyway....I gave them a chance and I like this album but it's nothing terribly special. I'd describe it as nice.

I'm okay when everything is not okay, is not okay"
