What Are You Listening To?

IAN DURY "new boots and panties" cd, 1977

debut album by a most unlikely artist...ugly as heck, couldnt really sing, and crippled by polio in his childhood...
yet, Ian overcame the odds to be one of the UK's leading artists of the late nineteen seventies punk/new wave era...
this one reached #5 on the UK charts and only one single was released off it in "sweet gene vincent"...a tribute to his idol...
NME(uk music mag) has the track "plaistow patricia" at #1 on their list of the "most in your face opening lines of a song"...and with the line "arse#oles,Bastards, fu##ing c#nts and pricks" its no wonder...!
look, you either like or loathe the crude, brash nature of Dury with his mostly cockney rhyming slang songs, but either way, you cant dismiss the impact he had on UK music and youth culture in that period of musical chaos!...
Dury died aged 57 in 2000 after a long battle with liver cancer and often stated that THC helped relieve the pain in those final years whereas conventional medicine didnt help him...RIP Ian!

Headed by none other than Ben Folds. Only two other members in the band. North Carolina based and Ben
called their music "punk rock for sissies". The band split in 2000 after 3 albums, of which this is
the second. Looks like they reformed for an album last year. This is the only one I have by the
group, but I do have a Ben Folds solo album coming up next. Five singles off of this, only getting
airplay on college rock stations no doubt. Only Brick, which is my favorite, had some success. Album
reached #42 here and has since been remastered with 7 additional tracks since my copy. I don't
think it would have made any difference in how this came out. Just too alternative for me. The songs
just go everywhere.
