my "singles" collection
#1
okay, a couple of moths ago i started playing a few of my old 7"/12" singles from back in the day...
and thought i would start posting them on the forum once Dani and I moved house...
i thought it would be cool to actually see what i thought of them after a lot of years of being boxed up....
most would be from the 78/79 UK New Wave era through to the late 1980s, but there are also a lot i have picked up over time from the 1960s and 1970s also, i will start playing these in a random order today, i will be playing w=both the "a" and "b" sides, rating them now and posting the links to both sides where availble on youtube...
some will surely come out as being terrible as times change,so has my music taste, other will obviously still be liked and some will stand the test of time IMO....
the reason i will be randomly picking them to play is because i dont want to hear 5,10,15,20 singles by any one particular artist in a row nowadays....

please note that i own a lot of singles that are still factory wrapped in mint condition as part of collections...i own all of Paul Weller's solo singles on 7"/10" and 12", i also own all of the vinyl singles by aussie band Jet the same way....plus numerous others that are limited edition releases for collector value only...

so stay tuned for "my singles collection!"

oh hey, almost forgot...
i used to get pocketmoney when i was young for doing small chores around the house...and for some reason i started buying singles, the first single i ver bought was "grease" by Franki Valli...
after a while i realised that if i save up for three weeks i could buy a whole album with 10 or 12 tracks instead of three singles containing a total of 6 tracks, thought that value was with albums overall...
so unless i really wanted a single that week i would usually wait for an album....
so i guess, i should start where it all began for singles with me...

FRANKI VALLI "grease" 7"vinyl 1978 ***

obviously, from the motion picture soundtrack....
reached either #1 or top10 in most countries....
still a classic single IMO and written by the Brothers Gibb to boot!
despite being ver disco-ish, i still love this track!
the "b" side was the instrumental version, which was a bummer, but whatever.
the instrumental "B"side is not available on youtube!

next single from my random pick belongs to aussie group The Flowers and it was released in 1980...Flowers changed their name to Icehouse a year or so after this was released...

this single peaked at #10 here, it was the debut single from these guys(i believe they released two others after this),
the vocals here on the "a" side have a very David Byrne feel to them IMO...
the second song(b-side) has a lot more guitars in the foreground instead of being mainly synth based...

side A "i cant help myself" **

side B "send somebody" *

strange how i compared that last one to David Byrne, when Talking Heads comes out right after it!!!!

this one was the first track released from their "little creatures" album from 1985...
the single failed to chart in their homeland, reaching #81 UK, #8 NZ and #24 here...

side A. "the lady dont mind" **

side B. "give me back my name" **

THE CLASH "white riot" b/w "1977"

the debut single from the Clash...just scraped into the top40 in the UK at #38, failed to chart anywhere else(as did most punk material!)
both the "a" and "b" sides here clock in at under 2minutes...just fast, furious, straight to the point rock...sort of 'say what you gotta say, get in, get out,too easy" sort of stuff!
a lot of people in the UK back in the day took the lead track as a call to arms for BNP(british national party-white supremicist group) to start a revolution, obviously this was not the case...
the song is a punk classic and appears on their brilliant debut album "the clash.

DAVID RUFFIN "take me clear from here" b/w "blood donor's needed(give all you can)"

1974 single release from the ex-temptations lead vocalist...
i cant find any info if this single even charted anywhere, but in the US the "blood donor" song was listed as the "a" side...
the single was lifted from the album "me and rock and roll are here to stay"...
Norman Whitfield produced this one for him...
love the "a" side...because i love the man's soulful voice!
