What Are You Listening To?
Jerome Wrote:Richie Havens - Wishing Well - a combination of exotic sounds and that unmistakable voice. Very deep album. The man is on a mission here.....
I love him and only have Richard P. Havens 1983 which was made in 1969
what would be your best album sir?

Only have this one MH. And another album by Peter Gabriel where he sings on one track. Nothing else. He even covers the Floyd track 'On the Turning Away' from AMLOR on this album which I did not expect.

Demons and Wizards - Uriah Heep - man this takes me back! And the first few notes of 'The Wizard' is the single best recording I have heard of an acoustic guitar in a studio to date. Period. It's almost like you are holding the damn thing yourself. Superb quality. http://youtu.be/Eq8nQOhZ3u8

21st album, #16 US, #18 UK, #13 Australia, #6 Canada
Singles - I Don't Wanna Go On With You Like That (#2 US, #30 UK, #24 Australia, #1 Canada)
..........Town Of Plenty (#74 UK #11, #95)
..........A Word In Spanish (#19 US, #10 Canada)

Quite a step down from the classic Elton John. This is 18 years later and a totally different artist. There is no starker contrast than these 2
albums. This still an ok album but Elton is a shadow of his former self. Three standout tracks and two that bit the dust. None of Elton's early
material bites the dust. Since God Invented Girls is my fav, love the Beach Boy/Captain Fantastic era harmonies. A Word In Spanish is the loner
of the 3 singles that I love. Then there's that Heavy Traffic thing which is really bad. This album was the middle of a decline of sales for
Elton here as he had already reached legendary status and there was nowhere else to go but the slide. It did outsell the previous Leather
Jackets which was Elton's first album to not crack the top 50 here. But wait, that's another review.

22nd album, #23 US, #1 UK, #2 Australia, #30 Canada
Singles - Healing Hands (#13 US, #45 UK, #14 Australia, #8 Canada)
..........Sacrifice (#18 US, #1 UK, #7 Australia, #19 Canada)
..........Club At The End Of The Street (#28 US, #47 UK, #19 Australia, #12 Canada)

Liner note here says this album was inspired by soul pioneers of the 60's-70's. They must still be trying to figure out who they are, as nothing
on here has any resemblance to any soul music I heard back then. But whatever Elton/Bernie, you guys go ahead and discover your roots. I'll just
listen. Down to 1 love track on an Elton album, the beautiful Amazes Me. Not having the required fresh listens of all, this may be my first sub
2.0 score for an Elton album. But at least I didn't have bonus tracks to drag it down more. I just read where Sacrifice off of here was Elton's
first #1 single in the UK, and the album is his all time best selling there. That seems unreal.

Mark Knopfler - Shangri-La. Not as good as his other albums but some pleasant laid-back tracks. Quality performance if not quite quality material.

it would be a close call for me with best track on the elton album between your favourite and "sacrifice"

"dont go breakin my heart" with Kiki Dee also reached #1 in the UK, but that is credited to the "duo" not Elton as a solo artist

curious about that Sacrifice song
I don't ever even remember hearing that here
it did hit our chart at #18
must have been one of my out of touch periods
it says the song was re-released in Aus and UK which is when it became a hit
wonder what the reason was to re-release
some other media must have pushed that

never cared for that Kiki Dee thing

Believe it or not - Sacrifice was his first No1 in the UK. Kid you not. Read about it in the excellent biography 'Elton' - a great read, especially when he took the tabloids to court and won. They were even forced to print a front page apology after it was claimed he cut his dogs vocal cords out because he did not like the barking. Typical English trash papers - anything for a buck - true or not.
