unusual instruments in jazz
#1
Julius Watkins, Steve Turre and Dorothy Ashby have one thing in common--all pioneered or were the only one to play an instrument not normally associated with jazz.

French horn--Mr. Watkins has been on the scene since the '50's and been brilliant all this time: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xy-gO9u7SQ0 and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JGYCTARFR0g Played with the estimable Charlie Rouse for years.: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NhkfX7KypCk finally: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LXTxtD3McP8

Harp--not the harmonica played differently: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eebQsajwjNo and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c2YSdlD7378 << soft jazz IS NOT smooth jazz This next isn't jazz but Lordy, isn't it beautiful! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9xvSRWpnyw finally: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EaeOoQTDz3I

Shells--sea shells, that is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRTXJHzL3s8 and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jgLa4alB67U finally http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkuq6prZHoA << he plays a killer trombone too

All three are magnificent finds, I do favour the shells though! Thank-you for a whole new world jazzboCR!

Talking of unusual instruments, I use products from a company called Sonniccouture in my own projects - they have some pretty unusual instruments. Granted it's not jazz, but I could easily see them being used in that context.

What a marvellous combo of instrument and voice. What a great share! Can't let it go with just one:
Unguarded moments in a music shop: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RgDrLlT8pGU Here playing another GAS (Great American Songbook) tune: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=COuWZqY8-jA << nice lilt and tilt to her voice

There's another excellent swing uke player, Gerald Ross. A couple by him: solo in a studio: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5L-ckVtz7rE << nice description of his ax Then: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4gVT7z0wiE << another solo piece
BUT I really wanted to go another way, to 8 strings--The Jazz Mandolin Project. Best place to start is '99's Tour de Flux--AMG makes a point of saying they are literally and figuratively all over the map (bop, avant-garde, world styles). Here's some other stuff: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_e9Y7K7vUo << lively sense of humor, this lad >> and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2C4ZP6aHfM and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ee0ubMk1HZ8 << Not at all conventional, but if Jamie Masefield labels his music "jazz", who are we to disagree?

Edited to embolden names only.

Nice posts Jazz! Ross is a virtuoso ukulele player for sure...makes it look so dam easy and uses a lot of notes! As for the Jazz Mandolin Project...wow! Very impressive...enjoyed the "slide" mandolin!
