I have never understood people's fascination with McGowan and/or Pogues....
I just don't rate them as any more than a third rate pub band....
So,
To all the fans I say their full/complete name....pogue Mahone, lmao

About Calexico: Known of them without knowing them--I'm inspired to do a piece. Incidentally, those red blooms? https://images.search.yahoo.com/images/v...-fh_lsonsw

"office pogue" is the worst name somebody on a shop floor can sling at an office worker or other drone...usually followed by spitting on the floor, hopefully to one side or another.

ok....
a "pogue mahone" is Gaelic for "kiss my ass"....
the Pogues were staunch Catholics, and as such despised the English and have done ever since barbarian Oliver Cromwell went over there and slaughtered thousands of them in the 1600s...
its strange how barbarians become heroes isnt it...
Cromwell has long been regarded as a hero in the UK, the same as Custer was in the US...history now paints a realistic picture of both.
the Pogues knew that if they made it, it would be in the UK...the name was their little 'dig' at the British with the attitude..."ok,we've got your money, now you can kiss my ass", the Mahone was dropped around the time they recorded their first album to not allienate the UK'ers before they 'took their money'...
everyone in the UK knew what Pogue Mahone meant, they took it as simply being the Irish humour aimed the BBC and other 'institutions' in the UK and regarded their attitude as being confrontational in a tongue-in-cheek style like Sex Pistols...
but, McGowan and Co werent foolin'!...
the last laugh was on the Brits...LMAO

this albm stats: #5 NZ, #6 AU, #22 UK
singles:
"divebomber".......................no chart action

Neil's first solo album(under his own name) in twelve years...
that doesnt mean he was silent during that period, he recorded two albums under the name 7-Worlds Collide, one under the name Pajama Club, went on tour with Paul Kelly on a number of occasions and released a live set with him...he also managed to score the soundtrack to The Hobbit movie(only one of them, not sure which one though)...
anyway, this album...
i sounds are very dreamy here, some similar in style and vein to Lennon's "#9 dream" type sound, others sound similar to the material he was doing in the latter years of Crowded House...
i note that there is very little on here that is 'catchy'...like the CH and Split Enz material...
i like it, but it just hasnt grown on me much over the last twleve months, but it is still okay for a guy who is almost forty years into his career
I LIKE THIS ALBUM

Florence Welch and Co's second album....
i bought this on the strength of the debut "lungs" upon day of release...i should have waited!
its good, but nowhere near the same quality as their debut...and sales reflrected that also...the debut sold around 7million worldwide, this one only 2million(according to Wiki)
album is a bit more heavy on the bass and drums than the debut but the songs just arent as good...
i hear bits of Kate Bush on this one(vocally) in places and also bits of Fleetwood Mac with the sounds they got on "tusk"...
like i said....its okay but had i heard it first i probably would not have purchased it...

firstly, this album is slated for US/Canadian release at the end of January '15....
it came out in the UK in June last year and here a month later...
where to start???
i bought this with my xmas giftcards and its been on almost a continual replay in my car ever since(except for a couple of days i let my mum borrow it)
Ezra...UK born and raised, nineteen years of age when he recorded this, yet his voice is very throaty and almost as deep in tone as Johnny Cash's voice was..
it is rich and mature, too much so for his tender age IMO...
the guy plays guitar and writes all his own material and even some of his lyrics are written of experiences beyond his age(like Lennon with say "in my life")
songs have an almost 1950s rockabilly sound in places and where that sound is not prevelant theres hints of folk...
he claims his musical inspirations and influences come from Bob Dylan and Woody Guthrie....
interesting to note that the guy who produced this one also produced the album posted just above this one(Florence + The Machine...)
all up this was the standout album for 2014 for me and with its release on the US marked this month should continue to sell pretty well over '15...
i asked my mum to rate the tracks of this one, which she did, and her scores will be posted in brackets next to mine
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

FOO FIGHTERS "skin and bones" cd, 2006
album stats: #21 US, #11 AU, #7 CAN, #35 UK
after five studio albums Grohl and Co went on tour with an acoustic show which was taped and subsequently released on cd/dvd....
this is a superb set of live songs from their back catalogue stripped to skin and bones...
these tracks on here really show how good this this band really are and how good Grohl is as a vocalist...i mean, with acoustic songs/versions things cannot be hidden
underneath feedback,reverb,pounding drums etc....
its a classy effort, not as good as the Nirvana equivelant, but excellant just the same...
as you guys know, i do not score live albums...i either dislike, like or love them as a recording...this one, i love!
from the album:
best of you
