Happy Birthday to Lee Clayton who is 73 today. He was born Billy Shotts in Russellville, Alabama, USA. Iâve never understood why he disappeared off the music scene, or why he hasnât gained greater recognition, unless he really peeved some people somewhere along the line; he was quite vocal about certain issues and his music is referred to as âoutlaw countryâ.
On the other hand â he didnât really have a great voice, technically speaking, which doesnât make any difference at all to my enjoyment of his music, which I love; his Naked Child has to be one of my favourite albums of all time (JJ Cale is on it, they have a similar sound â Claytonâs is rockier IMHO). The instrumentation on "Jaded Virgin" is fab - no samples available I'm afraid. He wrote âLadies Love Outlawsâ which became a hit for Waylon Jennings and a couple of artists have covered some of his other songs, âSilver Stallionâ, for example - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XtnOluEg90c .
