Emo is a musical movement but it is the lyrics that define it. No one would call them emo without the crude lyrics and similar actions on-stage as well as their type of fashion without the lyrical writing. Although we look at them now as a bad genre, so did people in the 80s with the emergence of goth rock, but goth rock had a huge fan base with its emotional lyrics.
Emo reminds me slightly of this era, but with more violence and angst. Still, they are willing to do something new and different and portray their emotions to the public.
