I came to "On An Island" with no preconceptions. I had only heard of it once or twice, I did not even know it had been No. 1 on the album charts, but I saw it available at the local library and borrowed it.
My reaction was very different from that of you guys. I thought it was quite magical. there are overtones of The Division bell, but also something quite unique. I was slightly blown away by the fact that at his age, when many other artists (including certain other ex-PF members) are basically living on their legacies, he brought out something that actually sounded totally fresh.
Oh, and I also thought Rattle That Lock was quite weak. Not actually bad music, just sort of uninspiring.
