DAVID BOWIE "pinups" cd, 1973
career stats:
studio albums.....28
singles..............121
this album............#1 UK...#4 AU...#23 US
singles:
"sorrow".............#3 UK...#1 AU
Bowie's eighth studio set and second from 1973....
songs are covers of which the originals were released in the UK between 64-67...
album was supposed to highlight rarely heard and obscure songs that the Americans missed out on...
he had plans to initially release two of these albums but didn't follow through with the second album...
all these songs on here are given a distinct Bowie feel...he put his own stamp on all these tracks to make them 'his own'...
at least half the album doesn't work for me....
and to be fair, there are several original versions I have never heard so I don't know if they are good or bad neither...
its impossible to go past his cover of The Merseys' "sorrow"...IMO, this song could have been a Bowie original...
theres covers on here from The Who. Kinks, Pink Floyd, Easybeats to name a few...
IMO, he adds nothing to some of these...and no one, I mean, no one should ever be allowed to cover The Who.
Bowie albums to me are generally brilliant or terrible and its always hit or miss, but even the bad ones usually contain a couple
of great tracks, but not in this case...one great track, a few okay one tracks and six terrible ones...
I DO NOT LIKE THIS ALBUM
worst track: anyway, anyhow, anywhere
best track: sorrow
