I'd recommend film music. The genre goes well beyond the Star Wars-style big orchestral stuff - which is fantastic, don't get me wrong - to encompas all styles of music.
Film music is written to underline mood or place or time. So there's all sorts out there.
As a taster, I'd recommend:
John Barry's Somewhere In Time, You Only Live Twice and Diamonds Are Forever.
Ennio Morricone's The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, Once Upon A Time In The West and The Untouchables.
Roy Budd's Kidnapped and Get Carter
Fred Karlin's Westworld
Some compilations can be pretty good as well. Varese Sarabande have a couple of collections with - I think - four CDs each.
If you do buy anything, try to aim for the original soundtrack recording because some of the cheaper cover versions may put you off.
