Australian music charts for 15th October 2016:

singles:

British singer-songwriter James Arthur scores his first #1 on the ARIA Singles Chart with ‘Say You Won’t Let Go’. The track – the first from Arthur’s forthcoming Back From The Edge album – hits #1 in its fourth week in the top 50 thanks to a jump of two spots. Arthur’s previous chart peak was with ‘Impossible’ (#2 Feb. ’13). ‘Say You Won’t Let Go’ spent two weeks at #1 in the UK.
Up two spots from last week, ‘Starboy’ levels with ‘Can’t Feel My Face’ (#2 Jul. ’15) as The Weeknd’s highest Singles Chart peak.
In its sixth week on the chart Sia’s ‘The Greatest’ moves back up three spots to #5.
The may have lost the #1 this week after a nine week run with ‘Closer’ but The Chainsmokers have scored their fifth top ten after ‘All I Know’ moves up one spot.
Debuts:
#12: Bruno Mars ‘24K Magic’ – With the title track and first single from his forthcoming third album, Bruno Mars has picked up his first appearance on the ARIA Singles as a lead artist since 2013. In between his charting with ‘Gorilla’ (#41 Sept. ’13) and now, Mars hit #1 as the featured artist on Mark Ronson’s ‘Uptown Funk’ (#1 Dec. ’14). The album 24K Magic is set for release in November.
#26: John Legend ‘Love Me Now’ – American singer-songwriter John Legend scores his second career top 50 appearance as a lead artist with ‘Love Me Now’. It’s the lead single from the forthcoming album Darkness And Light. Legend first charted in the top 50 with ‘All Of Me’ (#1 Dec. ’13). He most recently appeared as the featured artist on Meghan Trainor’s ‘Like I'm Gonna Lose You’ (#1 Jun. ’15).
#37: Lady Gaga ‘Million Reasons’ – The second track to chart from Lady Gaga’s forthcoming album Joanne. Like ‘Perfect Illusion’ (#14 Sept. ’16), ‘Million Reasons’ sees Gaga collaborating with producers Mark Ronson and BloodPop. Joanne is out next week (21 October).

A new #1 again this week on the ARIA Albums Chart with Triple J’s Like A Version 12 debuting in the top spot (see below).
With his tour announced and on sale, Justin Bieber’s Purpose has jumped up 16 spots to #11.
There’s also been moves by chart mainstays Taylor Swift’s 1989 (up nine to #17), Ed Sheeran’s X (up nine to #19) and Meghan Trainor’s Title (up 13 to #24).
The Weeknd has the week’s highest re-entry, with Beauty Behind The Madness returning to the top 50 at #32.
Debuts:
#1: Various ‘Triple J's Like A Version 12’ – Triple J's Like A Version 12 becomes the fourth consecutive release in the Like A Version series to debut at #1 on the ARIA Albums Chart. The two-disc, 39 track collection includes Tame Impala covering Kylie Minogue, Sarah Blasko covering David Bowie, Alpine covering Ben Lee, The Rubens covering Kendrick Lamar and Adele, plus more. The previous three Like A Version #1s were with Triple J's Like A Version 9 (#1 Oct. '13), Triple J's Like A Version 10 (#1 Oct. '14) and Triple J's Like A Version 11 (#1 Oct. '15).
#2: Green Day ‘Revolution Radio’ – Four years on from the release of the Uno! (#3 Oct. ’12) Dos! (#10 Nov. ’12) and Tre! (#22 Dec. ’12) trilogy of albums, Green Day returns with Revolution Radio. The band’s twelfth album is their second #2, following 21st Century Breakdown (#2 May ’09).
#3: Barry Gibb: ‘In The Now’ – Bee Gees legend Barry Gibb makes his solo ARIA Albums Chart debut with In The Now. It’s Gibb’s second solo album – his debut, Now Voyager, was released in 1984 – and his first release of original material since the final Bee Gees studio album This Is Where I Came In (#16 Apr. ’01).
#4: Norah Jones ‘Day Breaks’ – The first solo album in four years from Norah Jones. The follow-up to Little Broken Hearts (#5 May ’12) is the American singer-songwriter’s sixth album under her own name. In between solo releases, Jones released the album No Fools, No Fun as a member of alt-country trio Puss N Boots, as well as the Everly Brothers tribute Foreverly with Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong.
#6: Alter Bridge ‘The Last Hero’ – Album five from Alter Bridge gives the American band their fourth appearance in the ARIA top 50. The Last Hero is the follow-up to Fortress (#13 Oct. ’13) and becomes the group’s first top ten.
#8: OneRepublic ‘Oh My My’ – OneRepublic pick up their third top ten on the ARIA Albums Chart with Oh My My. The band’s fourth album comes three years on from Native and features the single ‘Wherever I Go’ (#32 Jul. ’16).
#9: Meshuggah ‘The Violent Sleep Of Reason’ – The eighth album from Meshuggah gives the Swedish metal band their second top 50 appearance. The Violent Sleep Of Reason is the follow-up to Koloss (#36 Apr. ‘12) and comes 25 years after their debut, Contradictions Collapse.
#13: Sum 41 ’13 Voices’ – Five years on from Screaming Bloody Murder (#16 Apr. ’11), Canadian punks Sum 41 return with 13 Voices. The band’s sixth studio album joins Chuck (#13 Oct. ’04) as their highest peak.
#16: Paul Kelly & Charlie Owen ‘Death's Dateless Night’ – For his 22nd studio album, ARIA Hall Of Famer Paul Kelly has teamed up with multi-instrumentalist Charlie Owen for an album of covers of Cole Porter, Townes Van Zandt, Leonard Cohen, Hank Williams, Lennon/McCartney and more, inspired by funerals. Kelly charted earlier in 2016 with Seven Sonnets And A Song (#9 May ’16).
#22: D.D Dumbo ‘Utopia Defeated’ – The debut album from Victorian singer-songwriter/multi-instrumentalist D.D Dumbo, aka Oliver Hugh Perry. It’s the follow-up to the 2013 EP Tropical Oceans and was recorded, engineered and produced almost entirely by Perry.
#27: NOFX ‘First Ditch Effort’ – Veteran Californian pinks NOFX return to the top 50 for the first time since 2009 with First Ditch Effort. The follow-up to 2012’s Self Entitled is NOFX’s thirteenth album. They last charted with Coaster (#24 May ’09).
#40: Melissa Etheridge ‘Memphis Rock And Soul’ – After 15 years out of the top 50, Melissa Etheridge snares her second debut on the Albums Chart in 2016 with Memphis Rock And Soul. The follow-up to This Is M.E. (#34 Apr. ’16) sees Etheridge pay tribute to the Stax label with covers of classics such as ‘Hold On, I’m Coming’, ‘I’ll Take You There’, ‘Respect Yourself’ and more.
#49: Julia Jacklin ‘Don’t Let The Kids Win’ – Blue Mountains singer-songwriter Julia Jacklin makes her Albums Chart debut with Don’t Let The Kids Win. It’s the alt-country artist’s debut album and was recorded in New Zealand with producer Ben Edwards (Marlon Williams, Aldous Harding, Nadia Reid).
