This came up before, when I posted Terry Reid in BOTD, so I checked it out again. Hope I have my facts straight!
Re the birth of Led Zep, seems that when the Yarbirds were in the process of slowly fizzling out, Jimmy Page was talking about a âsupergroupâ comprising himself, Jeff Beck, John Entwistle and Keith Moon with either Steve Winwood or Steve Marriott as vocalist (who JP had set as his benchmark for a singer, and who, incidentally, already had Robert Plant as a huge fan). As you say, CH, Marriott turned him down and that group never formed, obviously, and the Yardbirds straggled along until playing their last gig about a year and a half later. They still had a remaining contractual obligation to tour Scandinavia though, at which point, after getting the go ahead from management, Page approached Terry Reid to come on board as singer, who in turn pointed him in the direction of Robert Plant and John Bonham who was also in Band of Joy. John Paul Jones had already played a couple of sessions with Page so applied for the bass vacancy, and voila ⦠a touring New Yardbirds was formed. They gelled, fortunately, and had to drop the New Yardbirds name just before releasing their debut, which theyâd already recorded, as one of the erstwhile common or garden Yardbirds was making a fuss about it all. Probably not a bad thing as Led Zeppelin was infinitely the more inspired title. Anyway â¦
Terry Reidâs another story altogether â revered by many, it would seem, itâs something of a mystery that he never became hugely famous ⦠most likely to do with the fact that he didnât enjoy being told what to do, or how to play and sing, so he just carried on doing his own thing.
