Slade "merry Christmas Everybody"

Band Aid "do they know its christmas?"

Cliff Richard "mistletoe and wine"

Boney M "Mary's boy child"

I used to love Wings' "mull of kintyre" but ive gone off it over the last few years, but I think at the time it was a worthy #1 or Christmas.

The only one I really like enough to consider buying for its musical worth, rather than just for the cause, is the Band Aid one.They absolutely nailed it, and that doesn't often happen with songs specially written for charitable causes and sung by a motley collection of artists who have little in common except that they all agreed to donate their time and skill to the cause.

For example, I think "We are the World", the US counterpart released soon after the Band Aid one, is a horrible song.

I admit to being unfamiliar with the Cliff Richard one.

Boney M: over the years I initially got tired of this group, and later came to quite dislike them. They wewre techincally proficient in their performances I suppose, but there was a curious soulless quality about their singing, It was mechanical, with almost no emotion. Someone who did not understand English would have found little to distinguish between, say, Mary's Boy Child, Ma Baker, or Rivers of Babylon.
