Bohemian Rhapsody (Freddie bio-pic)
#3
Went to see this movie today. Wow, wow – what brilliant casting! Especially Brian May – I actually found myself believing it WAS him- John Deacon too! Roger Taylor is a tad too pretty, but then I suppose he was, lol!

I think Rami Malek did a fantastic job of emulating Freddie’s characteristics and mannerisms - his gait, his ebullience and swagger, and his spoken voice (to a very large degree), although his first singing scene reminded me more of Mick Jagger than anyone else!

To be honest I’m not sure the film did Freddie’s genius proper justice – then again, it isn’t documentary, although as CH said before, it was closely monitored and approved by Brian May and Roger Taylor.

There are some discrepancies along the way, no doubt due to having to pack so much into around two hours, amongst other things, but on the whole, and despite these few criticisms, it was an excellent watch – you get a really good idea of how the adrenalin must have been pumping during those performances and just a leetle idea of how the creative processes behind the phenomenon that was Queen played itself out. I would have liked to have seen more of that side of things, but you can’t please everyone and I will say this – it’s a long time, if ever, since I went to a movie house and the audience remained glued to their seats past the final credits to the lights coming on, and then some.

Having watched the Days of our Lives documentary which IMHO is definitive, I know how protective and supportive the rest of the band was, and how Freddie’s work ethic remained intact, right to the end and without self-pity, so I think they managed to sneak in that element well – the Live Aid section was brilliantly done, although I did wonder why they didn't close out the movie with the real version which I think would have worked well but I guess there must have been a reason and Malek picked up each and every little nuance - amazing.

I’m really glad I got to see it on the big screen and would recommend.
