I disagree with both posters above. The first is living in some sort of fantasy and the second is only interested in personal gain.
In order to create a work of art (in whatever form) it means realising your original vision for the work. How many people you influence with it is irrelevant. If you are only giving people what they want you are simply 'playing to the gallery'. If you are being true to your own vision, you are being creative. The truly great albums of the last 60 years have mostly been created by people who did what they wanted to do, not what the audience wanted - in fact half the time the audience did not even know what they wanted anyway.
