No wonder there’s so much stuff out there that can’t even be called music. The majority of people wouldn't even dream of buying an album anymore – hell, hardly anyone listens to a whole song without switching over to something else, never mind an entire album. It’s a different beastie these days – tours and merchandise are undoubtedly what makes the money.
I do stream music on YouTube and Spotify etc., but I also buy a physical copy if it’s something I like, as do we all (MH excepted whose dues are well and truly paid if that shed is anything to go by!).
There are some artists who block streaming of any description and that’s perfectly fine – I understand why but it’s tricky one because we are seemingly reluctant to commit to a purchase now unless we have a pretty good idea of what’s in store. Funny that, because way back in the dark ages we bought music without having heard it first and there was not a lot to beat the deliciousness of unwrapping a record and listening to it for the very first time!
It’s almost as if there are completely different musical worlds – the very commercial blah blah forgettable churned out rubbish that feeds I don’t even know who (but obviously there’s a market for it because the bling is unbelievable – then again – lives are also fairly short!!), and the real musos who actually play instruments and sing and go on tour, or who used to – they’re having to reinvent themselves now. I dunno …. buskers are probably doing better collecting cash on the streets. Sorry state of affairs. Just ordered Steve Hackett's new album - decided I had better walk my talk!
