NEW AND NOTABLE: upcoming albums

You turn your back for five minutes and a new Gerry Rafferty release appears!! Did not see that one coming! Mind you, I’ve noticed this trend. Loads of reinventing and posthumous stuff going on right now, and not a whole lot else. This album, which is to be released on the 3rd of September, is the result of his daughter going through his archival material – he’d been working on and off on getting an 11th album together prior to his death, and here we are … it’s called Rest in Blue.

I’ve listened to the two songs that are available, and while it’s so good to hear that voice, I have reservations; he was a perfectionist (when it came to his music), and these are unfinished – patently so – not to mention a little wonky, as they would be, not being ready for an audience. Not sure he’d have approved of the lack of polish and I’m also not sure that unveiling these songs will do justice to his genius, although even in less than perfect form they are considerably more earworthy than most of the rubbish that’s being churned out at present. It’s a moot point, obviously, and perhaps I will wait for the album before being too critical. Just my initial response, imagining him cringing a little - you’d think I knew him well – lol! Flights of fancy - what can I say? Here they are then …
