Mike Marshall was born on this day in 1957, in New Castle, Pennsylvania, USA. He is a bluegrass mandolinist, but don’t make the mistake of thinking hayseed – he’s a virtuoso alright – extremely sophisticated. Took the opportunity to listen to his album with Darol Anger, Chiaroscuro, which also happens to be a word I’ve loved since first learning its meaning. The old masters were specialists - the use of light and shade to give body and volume to their works – Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Vermeer, Da Vinci to name a few. I'd say Marshall and Anger were successful in their endeavour to replicate the technique musically. A Windham Hill release, which doesn’t exactly surprise me – wonderful music – food for the soul … need to listen to some more of his stuff.
