Esperanza Spalding was born on this day in 1984, in Portland, Oregon. She is a natural â seeing and hearing Yo-Yo Ma when she was four years old, she says made a big impression on her and determined her eventual musical direction. She plays the cello, violin, bass guitar and sings in English, Spanish and Portuguese, but her big love is for the double bass. She has four Grammyâs tucked neatly under her belt and she is the first ever jazz musician to win in the Best New Artist category (2011), pipping the Bieber at the post on that one! I do not understand how one could even begin to compare them?!
She set William Blakeâs poem âLittle Flyâ to music â and very nice it is too - [URL="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2JRGv91urY"]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2JRGv91urY
