I prefer just seeing the band live, though I have always liked live recordings of bands better than the studio. A lot of times, due to the difference in mixing because of the limitations of the sound board, certain elements are louder than before and are sort of put into context for me. The songs make sense. As for studio recordings taking the soul out of music... I suppose it depends on the type of music you like. A lot of pop bands use pitch correction on their vocals. A lot of bands don't. It's just a matter of taste, really... No one else I know really likes live recordings.
