I think it's good to have the discussion.
Contemporary R&B, and Hip Hop don't really play much part in my life, so I'm a bit guilty of listening to "Rock & Roll and maybe a few related genres". The song content doesn't really speak to me in either genre, but this has little to do with the sub-cultural references.
My views are much the same with Metal. I still have albums in all these genres which I like lots, it's just that they're fairly few and far between.
