Man, Whodini was a great group. I saw them twice in the '80-early90s. Last year, they performed at a city arts festival and I happened to be there with my kids and another family. It was great to see the old men rock the mike again.
Yeah, there's some stuff on the radio that is geared for younger listeners and listeners without discerning musical taste. But that's the way it is with most radio stations that play contemporary music. If you listen to urban radio, you have to listen to Lloyd, Rihanna, Chris Brown, Keri Hilson, Jamie Foxx, etc. I stopped listening to radio for music a decade ago. I don't turn to radio to provide my Hip Hop, nor my R&B.
I don't think Hip Hop needs to evolve any more than any other genre needs to. There are mature Hip Hop acts, and acts for teenage listeners. There are mature R&B acts, and acts for teenage listeners. There are mature Rock & Roll acts, and acts for teenage listeners. As patrons, it's up to us to find those acts that suit our tastes. I've found more great Hip Hop than I have the time to listen to, as I have with any other genre. Trust me, Hip Hop has come of age.
Not that I'm saying any of this to convince you to listen to it. We all have our personal tastes. I just thought you should know Hip Hop in 2010 didn't begin with Soulja Boy and end with Kanye West.
