I'd agree with Crazy-Man, up to a point. In the West, we all share some degree of cultural reference points, and our own tastes and experiences lead us to explore different strands of music, and develop our own set of tastes.
However, what about locations around the world who don't have access to Western music. There are plenty of places that only know their own indigenous music. Africa and Asia are the prime areas, I'd guess.
National barriers also play a part. I don't know if it's true of all French radio, but I've heard of one French station that has to play one French record to every two english language records.
