Ah, the Doobies. Never one of my favorite bands, but they were always consistent. Don't know of any bad albums, although I'm missing a few. This album put them in that blue-eyed soul category such as Hall & Oates for me. Probably more from Michael McDonalds voice than anything else. Patrick Simmons takes lead vocals on about half of these, but Michaels are much smoother. This album placed more emphasis on keyboards and horns, unlike previous guitar oriented releases. Single of What A Fool Believes is my favorite with 2 other standouts. That single was the bands biggest hit and earned them a grammy as did the album. Both reached #1 on the charts. The title tracks also charted at #14. The instrumental Steamer Lane Breakdown is the only track I don't care for. This would be the last Doobies album long time member Jeff Baxter would appear on. Guest appearances by Nicolette Larson and Michael Jackson is said to appear on several tracks.
I LIKE THIS ALBUM
Worst Track - Streamer Lane Breakdown
Best Track - What A Fool Believes
He came from somewhere back in her long ago
The sentimental fool don't see
Tryin' hard to recreate
What had yet to be created once in her life
She musters a smile
For his nostalgic tale
Never coming near what he wanted to say
Only to realize
It never really was
She had a place in his life
He never made her think twice
As she rises to her apology
Anybody else would surely know
He's watching her go
But what a fool believes he sees
No wise man has the power to reason away
What seems to be
Is always better than nothing
And nothing at all keeps sending him...
Somewhere back in her long ago
Where he can still believe there's a place in her life
Someday, somewhere, she will return
She had a place in his life
He never made her think twice
As she rises to her apology
Anybody else would surely know
He's watching her go
But what a fool believes he sees
No wise man has the power to reason away
What seems to be
Is always better than nothing
There's nothing at all
But what a fool believes he sees...
