How do you determine if an artist or album is" too sugar coated" or "poppy" ?

Another thread started out of sheer curiosity. The reason being is that my 14 year old grand daughter remarked today that Jessie J's Price Tag was too poppy after I asked her if she liked it,(I do...catchy retro tune). She said Katie Perry is better and that Lady GaGa is too strange. So that's the modern music critique for the day.

Can you detect if a tune or album is too poppy or sugar-coated ? I look at it in simplistic terms - if you like ..you like it...no genres count...like Crazy-Horse would say.
