Your summary is 100% correct. The reason the tracks are so long is that they allow time for the accompanying chemicals to kick in. Just one point here - that guitar solo on Dogs is blistering. But they are not 'songs' as such - more like instrumental sequences with words attached. Also bear in mind this is just before Waters went into meltdown. One thing I do like about the album is the choice of keyboard sounds even though Waters blasted Wright for not contributing enough. I think his keyboards are the most important part of the instrumentation of the album.
