Thanks for sharing this article, Music Head ! I enjoy reading music history. Both rock and soul are interchangeable in a lot of music ! The Beatles lived off of soul at their birth and even later on with John Lennon's soulful renditions on his solo album Rock n' Roll and his searing vocals on Help and I'm Down. Twist and Shout was an epic example of Beatles' Soul. Paul belts out Oh Darling on Abbey Road with tons of emotion and soul. There are several other examples.
James Brown and Aretha Franklin, as well as Chuck Berry, Smokey Robinson, Sam Cooke and Etta James ..to name a few of many...had a direct impact in my view in the validity and creation of Rock n' Roll as we know it today ! Soul/rhythm n' blues as well as gospel had a huge influence on Elvis Presley ! Of course the precursor to all of this... the Blues was the undisputed father of Rock !..as well as Soul for that matter.
