This album fits in absolutely none of our genres, so just pretend it's where you think it should be.
May be at the top of my list from the lads. First Of May just melts me. And plenty to go with it. Sixth album, and
a double set. Loaded with strings and beautiful harmonies. Even a couple of instrumentals that don't get my low
score. They are more like classical music with some choir. A feud developed between Robin and Barry over which
track would be the first single, Robin's Lamplight or Barry's First Of May. Both excellent tracks, but Barry won
and Robin left the band, though returning later. First Of May never charted here so maybe Robin was right. The
album was a #10 in the U.K. and a #20 here. I have the original red velvet cover which was quite simple but fun to
run your hand over. Interesting to see Paul Buckmaster shows up here (cello), who would later surface on some of
Elton Johns best work. Originnaly intended as a concept album, that was abandoned when the feuding began. Said by
allmusic to be one of only three double albums of the decade to not include filler material. The other two? Blonde
On Blonde and The Beatles. I would disagree with The Beatles as that, but whatever (Number 9 anyone?).
I LOVE THIS ALBUM
Worst Track - With All Nations
Best Track - First Of May
When I was small, and Christmas trees were tall,
we used to love while others used to play.
Don't ask me why, but time has passed us by,
some one else moved in from far away.
Now we are tall, and Christmas trees are small,
and you don't ask the time of day.
But you and I, our love will never die,
but guess we'll cry come first of May.
The apple tree that grew for you and me,
I watched the apples falling one by one.
And I recall the moment of them all,
the day I kissed your cheek and you were gone.
Now we are tall, and Christmas trees are small,
and you don't ask the time of day.
But you and I, our love will never die,
but guess we'll cry come first of May.
When I was small, and Christmas trees were tall,
do do do do do do do do do...
Don't ask me why, but time has passed us by,
some one else moved in from far away.
