Written by Tom Scholz
Billboard Chart: #5
the band
Tom Scholz - acoustic guitar, lead guitar, bass guitar
Brad Delp - vocals
Sib Hashian - drums

VH1 has it as their 39th best hard rock song of all time. Never mind that the group did at least 30 other songs that
sounded just like it. This was the original sound, fresh at the time. Their debut single from their debut album. An
instant success. This song's main riff is referenced in the Nirvana single "Smells Like Teen Spirit". Didn't know
that little tidbit did you? See, isn't this fun? And how about according to Tom Scholz, this song is about "The
thrill one gets while driving fast cars". And here I thought it was about love. The album went to #3 in the U.S. and
#11 in the U.K. and has sold over 17 million copies. This song kicked it off.

This has been played to death on radio stations and I still love it. It just has a magical groove. Great music for the open road. How the hell did Brad Delp hit those high notes. Awesome track. And Tom Scholz developed his own foot pedals and outboard equipment for that unique guitar sound of his. (How many people noticed that the spaceships on the cover were upside down guitars?)

About Brad Delp: Delp committed suicide on March 9, 2007, aged 55. He was found dead in his home on Academy Avenue in Atkinson, New Hampshire, from the smoke of two charcoal grills he lit inside his sealed master bathroom.[SUP][4][/SUP] Delp was found by police and Delp's fiancee together, lying on a pillow on his bathroom floor. Delp left private notes in an office to his fiancee Sullivan and all of his family members, plus a public note paper-clipped to his shirt which read: "Mr. Brad Delp. "J'ai une ame solitaire". I am a lonely soul." The French portion translates as "I have a lonely soul."[SUP][5][/SUP][SUP][6][/SUP][SUP][7][/SUP][SUP][8]
