multitrack recording software i have just purchased

You can do that with pretty much any new software out there at the moment. All you need is a digital interface with the appropriate amount of inputs. That'll plug into your computer via USB/firewire/thunderbolt/etc. Then you just set up the tracks in your software (aka DAW).

That's a simplified description. Usually the small details vary depending on the software and computer setup you are using.
