THE HOLLIES "the air that i breathe:the very best of" cd,1993
26 tracks, most of which were either hits or regarded as rock standards now IMO....
the only problem i have here is that i prefer to listen to best of sets track listings in chronological order in order to listen to the progression of an artists skills as writers, but hey, thats just my opinion of how they should be released!
you name it, its probably on here right from their early singles through to a single written by Nik Kershaw ('the woman i love') which was recorded to support the release of this set.
interesting to note that a young elton John plays piano on "he aint heavy,he's my brother", and also supplies piano and backing vocals to "i cant tell the bottom from the top".
so of 26 tracks here there are only two i do not like, the rest, mostly 'love' tracks...love these guys, and loved them even before i was aware that Graham Nash was in the group....(same goes for The Byrds, loved 'em prior to knowing David Crosby was with them also...guess it all links up eventually doesnt it?!?
anyway, history has it that Nash left in the summer of 1968 to move to the US in order to pursue a solo career, there he met Crosby, becoming good friends...Crosby mentioned that he was about to do something with Stephen Stills in the studio...Nash sort of invited himself to the sessions and history was made...CSN was born out of a totally accidental situation.
enough of the CSN history lesson, back to The Hollies....they made some of the most memorable and catchy hits of the 1960s,Nash left, Albert Hammond wrote 'the air that i breathe' for them and they became true international soft rock stars into the 1970s and beyond...
these guys still tour(without Nash),they toured Australia in the last three or four years(i didnt see them though), and recieved rave reviews for their shows...true rock survivors IMO, love 'em,love 'em, love 'em!
I LOVE THIS ALBUM
