okay...time for my thoughts on Sgt.Peppers....
i do know that Paul was inspired to do more studio effects and multi layered things after he heard Beach Boys "pet sounds" album which absolutely blew his mind...
i think Sgt Peppers was originally meant to be a concept album to be released under the psuedenym "sgt peppers lonely hearts club band"(artist name)...
although multi layers,sound effects,looping,backwards tape stuff had been used previously by not only the Beatles but also other bands, this was the album that culminated the whole thing in one project(as far as im aware)...
George Martin(from what i read) actually commissioned the first synthesizer to be built for this project which lead the way for everything that followed electronically...
according to John Lennon, "lucy in the sky with diamonds" was not about an LSD trip as often rumoured, it was infact brought about from a drawing his son Julian did at school...he bought the drawing home and John asked him what it was...Jule's replied "its lucy in the sky", and so the song was created using images off the picture, so nothing to do with drugs whatsoever...
im also pretty sure the only factual drugs refference in the song was in the "day in the life" track with the "he blew his mind out in the car,he hadnt noticed that the lights had changed" lines...which was a reference to an actual experience of John's in his Rolls royce with another party(thinking from memory it was Dr.Robert, who was also had a somg written for him by the Fabs a year or two earlier called "dr.robert")
Christ, i wish Chris was here to give you guys(and myself) 100% accurate info on this album!!!!!!, but he's not, so i have to write what ive read about it...
yes, the album was hugely influential in the scheme of Rock And Roll history, and it must have sounded 'out of this world' back in 1967...i really wish i was there to hear it back then and it may have meant a whole lot more to me than it currently does...i do like the album, but it is not in my top three or four Beatle albums, they would be in no particular order:
1. Revolver
2. Abbey Road
3. the White Album
4. Hard Day's Night
5. Help!
