It makes me gag the stuff they label as R&B today. R&B was Big Joe Turner and Amos Milburn and Shirley & Lee and Roy Milton & His Solid Senders and Ella Mae Morse and Big Jay McNeely and the Ravens and early B.B. and Al Hibbler and Louis Jordan and Ruth Brown and Johnny Ace and Big Mama Thornton and Sister Rosetta Tharpe. I don't know what this stuff is today that they call R&B. There is certainly no connection to the stuff I mentioned and Kelly certainly couldn't hold a candle to any of them without burning himself. Modern R&B is certainly not a descendant of real R&B any more than any other genre today is. I want to put my foot up the arse of anyone who calls real R&B "old school." I have nothing against calling something old school--I'm old school--but modern R&B is not a new school of the genre, it is a different genre that stole the name and that's all it is. True R&B is not old school because it has never been replaced.
