2. Band Aid, âDo They Know Itâs Christmas?' ***
single written for a famine appeal by Bob Geldof and Ultravox frontman Midge Ure(he's the forgotten one here!).
little did they know the song would bring about the whole Live Aid thing in all conrers of the globe.
single contained a who's who of british rock both past and present, it also helped alienate Margaret Thatcher from the general public and her popularity slide when it was revealed that her government would still be cvollecting the relevant taxes for the sale of this charity record, she later did an about turn and didnt take the revenue for it!
single was re-recorded by Band Aid II a few years later,that version also topped the charts.
this single still makes it into the UK charts on an annual basis around xmastime.
