Have a look at any YT video featuring Simon Phillips. One of the best drummers out there and a master of getting the right tone out of a kit. He has spent years experimenting with different setups and I believe he has the ultimate sound. He endorses Tama kits so they can't be bad although his is custom made. http://youtu.be/zSO7IIQKLBg Bear in mind that this is being recorded on a crap system.
