The economy is improving though slowly. Private criminal litigation is one strong path but please remember that Public Defenders do important work too and there are such as the projects looking into past wrongful convictions, especially death penalty cases. Lawyers have the highest suicide rate of any profession but I don't expect you'll travel this path. Best wishes.
