Interesting factoid about Lonnie ..."The Guinness Book of British Hit Singles & Albums states Donegan was "Britain's most successful and influential recording artist before The Beatles. He chalked up 24 successive Top 30 hits, and was the first UK male to score two U.S. Top 10s".[SUP][1]quote from WIKI[/SUP]

its not about what music The Beatles played, its the artists before them that influenced them to become musicians in the first place and Lonnie Donegan was at the top of that list along with the early rockers like Gene Vincent,Elvis,Chuck,Little Richard.,Buddy HollyFats Domino..and John's first group The Quarrymen were a "skiffle" group.
Lonnie Donegan was,according to wiki(which you refer to frequently) also a major influence on Brian May...now i never heard Queen sound like "skiffle", but hey, if LD's influence on May's formative years made him pick up guitar, then....he WAS an influence on his career...

musicians "influences" run deeper and go further than the music they end up playing,

he also, took a lot of Civil War(US) folk songs,reinvented them made them popular once again...he doesnt sound like Woody Guthrie, but im sure if i looked that i'd find he was an influence on him.

About Lonnie Donegan--He gave huge amounts of pleasure to lots of folks, many of whom in the lower classes desperately needed surcease from their work-a-day lives. He deserved his success and accolades through the decades. Even his novelty songs were delivered professionally and never disavowed. Some songs of his on American themes--may I indulge myself?:

i have one cd of theirs, a compilation of 19 tracks which has been previously posted by me on MD and linked below...
these guys actually had bigger hits(chart placings) here in Australia than they did in the US.
