Ron Blair was born on this day in 1948, in San Diego, California. He was the original bass player for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and was with them for their first four albums between 1976 and 1982, rejoining the band in 2002.

The song (and the album) that I’ll always think of first when Mr Petty and his band are mentioned … from Damn the Torpedoes –

Happy Birthday to Michael Franks. He was born on this day in 1944 in La Jolla, California.

He’s an entirely self-taught smooth jazz maestro, and very pleasant listening he makes, especially when you’re in an indolent mood and not up to too many musical challenges! Nothing remotely jarring about this stuff – it was made for long, lazy, sunny afternoons, preferably somewhere near water.

The lyrics of some of his songs are sometimes a bit ditzy and quite good fun, without being banal (I really don’t know of anyone else who has a song titled “Eggplant”, or “Vincent’s Ear” for that matter!), and there’s a lot right with the ensembles he seems to have a knack for gathering around him - Joe Sample, Dave Sanborn, Michael Brecker to name a few.

He’s released 18 studio albums since 1973 and has had his songs recorded by artists such as Steely Dan, The Manhattan Transfer, Diana Krall, Ringo Starr, Shirley Bassey, the Carpenters and Patti Labelle.

The lead track from Blue Pacific - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=48aPSkTfmno

And the final track from The Art of Tea, his second album “Mr Blue” (on which can be found the aforementioned “Eggplant”, in case anyone’s interested!) …

Peter White was born on this day in 1954, in Luton, England. He’s a primarily acoustic guitarist and also an accordion and piano player who worked with Al Stewart for around 20 years and co-wrote some of his songs. He’s also released a respectable 14 solo albums as well as working with Basia and his brother Danny, and a few other smooth jazz/fusion stalwarts such as Grover Washington Jr – “Midnight in Manhattan” - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i0TO5m26Mh0

The title track from his solo album Caravan of Dreams - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yPUuN9Ft4rI

This lovely final track from Time Passages which he co-wrote and played on - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Umgrl8NQQG8

…. as he did on the #1 hit title track (album produced by Alan Parsons …)
