What Are You Listening To?

Fabulous record from 1977.

One of the great American guitar albums. Tom Verlaine & Richard Lloyd trade guitar parts throughout, and there's an irresistible Post-Punk energy to all the songs.

This album should be mandatory listening...

AllMusic 5/5 stars.

1985 debut from German Alternative Electro-Pop band, who were ZTT label-mates with Frankie Goes to Hollywood, and Art of Noise, with both of which they share a common sound.

These are dark Pop songs, with huge, overblown keyboards. Definitely of it's time, but this has been a bit of a favourite of mine for years.

Next up in the Leonard series, his fourth album. Loving 7 of the 11. Same producer as the last album. I would guess this is one of Leonards lesser selling albums, not even touching the U.S. charts. It did make #24 in the U.K. Stupid americans. Columbias initial U.S. release of this album, the cover was considered too provocative and replaced with a pic of LC. Alas, my vinyl release was not from that batch. Interesting note that Chelsea Hotel #2 was said by Cohen for years to be about his fling with Janis Joplin. He later said it was not true. A treat that Janis Ian does some of the backing vocals here. Excellent live clip from 1974 on track #3. Track #11 melts me.

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - Leaving Green Sleeves

Best Track - Take This Longing

Many men have loved the bells
you fastened to the rein,
and everyone who wanted you
they found what they will always want again.
Your beauty lost to you yourself
just as it was lost to them.

Oh take this longing from my tongue,
whatever useless things these hands have done.
Let me see your beauty broken down
like you would do for one you love.

Your body like a searchlight
my poverty revealed,
I would like to try your charity
until you cry, "Now you must try my greed."
And everything depends upon
how near you sleep to me

Just take this longing from my tongue
all the lonely things my hands have done.
Let me see your beauty broken down
like you would do for one your love.

Hungry as an archway
through which the troops have passed,
I stand in ruins behind you,
with your winter clothes, your broken sandal straps.
I love to see you naked over there
especially from the back.

Oh take this longing from my tongue,
all the useless things my hands have done,
untie for me your hired blue gown,
like you would do for one that you love.

You're faithful to the better man,
I'm afraid that he left.
So let me judge your love affair
in this very room where I have sentenced
mine to death.
I'll even wear these old laurel leaves
that he's shaken from his head.

Just take this longing from my tongue,
all the useless things my hands have done,
let me see your beauty broken down,
like you would do for one you love.
Like you would do for one you love.

2003 album from wonderfully unhinged US Alt-Rock band.

This set starts with a pin-sharp parody of Motorhead, which sounds pretty much indistinguishable from the real thing. Things quieten down after that, but don't get any less strange.

Genre-hopping abounds throughout, and they tackle each with aplomb. Never less than amusing IMHO...

YOU AM I "hifi way" 1995. cd #1 Aust.

You Am I are an Australian rockband who had their big break at our "big day out" summer festivals in 1993 where Soundgarden and Sonic Youth praised them and later took them on subsequent US tours.
this one is their second album and the first of three in a row that debuted at #1 on the aust charts.
Lead singer/writer, Tim Rogers was heavily influenced by The Who, Small Faces, The Jam and The Clash and this shows in their music and stage mannerisms.it is a good honest rock album, probably the best they made.
this one was recently rated the most influential australian album of the last two decades and features high in all-time album lists here....not sure why, its good but i dont rate it as being that good...guess the public gets what the public wants??

Here I go out on that limb again. Well what do you expect? I'm not gonna say I like something when I don't like it. We give honest opinions here. This music is excellent as background. Unfortunately I like my music frontground. A lot of Oldfield fans here, and I certainly recognize the talent. In fact, the live clip included here is superb. If my score was based on the video, the album would score in the like range. I really enjoyed the video. But my grade is based on the album under the headphones. There is just tires fast for me. Parts of this might make a nice film score. This is Mike's debut album and also the debut album for Virgin Records. The album was a #3 hit here in the states and #1 in the U.K. Wonder what it would have got to without The Exorcist.

I DO NOT LIKE THIS ALBUM

Not much new I can say about this one, as I have done the 4 albums the cuts are pulled from. Since they were all 3 star outings, likewise for this. Three tracks for each of the 4 albums. Only tracks not getting the top rating here are 2 of the ones from Songs From A Room. Normally I wouldn't have a best of cd from an artist that I have all of their studio product. In this case I must have purchased this when I first started getting cd's, and go it with no intention of getting the others. I soon realized my foolishness. Sorry about the duplicates posting, but it came up in the rotation and rules are rules. The album never touched the charts here.

Worst Track - The Partisan

Best Track - Famous Blue Raincoat

It's four in the morning, the end of December
I'm writing you now just to see if you're better
New York is cold, but I like where I'm living
There's music on Clinton Street all through the evening.

I hear that you're building your little house deep in the desert
You're living for nothing now, I hope you're keeping some kind of record.

Yes, and Jane came by with a lock of your hair
She said that you gave it to her
That night that you planned to go clear
Did you ever go clear?

Ah, the last time we saw you you looked so much older
Your famous blue raincoat was torn at the shoulder
You'd been to the station to meet every train
And you came home without Lili Marlene

And you treated my woman to a flake of your life
And when she came back she was nobody's wife.

Well I see you there with the rose in your teeth
One more thin gypsy thief
Well I see Jane's awake --

She sends her regards.
And what can I tell you my brother, my killer
What can I possibly say?
I guess that I miss you, I guess I forgive you
I'm glad you stood in my way.

If you ever come by here, for Jane or for me
Your enemy is sleeping, and his woman is free.

Yes, and thanks, for the trouble you took from her eyes
I thought it was there for good so I never tried.

And Jane came by with a lock of your hair
She said that you gave it to her
That night that you planned to go clear

Sincerely, L. Cohen
