What Are You Listening To?
from my library (vinyl)

Just great, this is gonna be a fine day. I go from watching one washed up performer (Wanda Jackson) on Letterman to listening to a washed up group as my album of the day. Will have to listen to something else to cleanse my ears after this. I gave up on these guys after this album. There have only been two more albums. The last one, just last year, was after a 20 year absence from the scene. I heard it online and it was really bad. This one, their seventh, isn't much better. The longtime Warner label had dropped them. Picked up by Enigma. A showing of #189 on the U.S. charts couldn't have done much for their prospects with the new boss. Disco Dancer was a single that only made the dance club charts.

I DO NOT LIKE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - Don't Be Cruel

Best Track - I'd Cry If You Died

hell is where you put me
and hell is where you're going to
until the next life
I say this twisted prayer for you
may the torment you put out
come back around twice multiplied.

Even though you let me go
I've got to let you know
I'd cry if you died.

The past is where you see me
the past is what will bring you down
destiny a moon eclipsed
in the shadows all is darkness now
may the evil in your heart
be your one and only friend for life

you pretend I don't exist
I have to let you know
I'd cry if you died

somewhere special
voices form words
and the words have meaning
so I reach out for someone new
and I wonder
will it ever be alright
(then I hear you secret radio
signaling that its time to go)

hell is where you put me
and hell is where well meet again
I will be waiting
to repeat a scene that never ends
molten pools of mockery
reflect a million sleepless nights
even though you acted low
I've got to let you know
I'd cry if you died

Wanda went from the "girl u want" to washed up hasbeen...

and you had the "freedom of choice" not to play this one...

at least its a "beautiful world" we live in...

even if you cant get no "satisfaction" from the flower pot hat men.

Great minds think alike Tracy...

Been away on a training course all week, and this was i-Pod listening earlier in the week.

Ex-Pixies mainman's debut which for me comes closest among his solo albums to the classic Pixies sound. Packed with great songs.

I think Frank/Black/Francis should be revered among all fans of quality Alternative Rock.

AllMusic 4+/5 stars.

TENPOLE TUDOR "eddie, old bob, dick and gary" 1981, vinyl. #44 UK.
another Malcom McLaren 'creation' that started life on vinyl by appearing on the Sex Pistols "great rock and roll swindle" singing such songs as "who killed bambi","friggin in the riggin" etc....which were good songs, however....
not sure what to make of this album even after 30 years, and even less sure as to why i even bought it when it was released, i guess it was because "swords of a thousand men" sounded different to everything else that radio was playing that caught my ear. the group made two more albums after this one, but only one more single littered the lower reaches of the Uk singles charts
the music is bad, the lyrics worse and Eddie Tudor makes John Lydon look like an opera star.
i dont like to be negative about records but this is bad, bad, bad!

My mate Tiggi did this one not too far back. The most eagerly anticipated of my end of year purchases. Sitting on the shelf for 2 months and it finally rose to the top. How's that for patience? Quite a debut from these english lads, with 2 grammy nominations (no wins) and a win in the Brit awards for album of the year. Loving most of this with not a thing I don't like. Avett Brothers all over again with the stand-up bass, banjo and mandolin. Loving it. I see where lead man Marcus Mumford has also served as Laura Marlings tour drummer and the band played on her most recent release. They are also scheduled to play on Ray Davies next effort. Sounds like a full schedule. Arcade Fire producer Markus Dravs takes the controls with another superb job. The album has peaked at #2 both here and in the U.K. with singles of Little Lion Man at #61 and The Cave at #27, both on Billboards charts.

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - White Blank Page

Best Track - The Cave

It's empty in the valley of your heart
The sun, it rises slowly as you walk
Away from all the fears
And all the faults you've left behind

The harvest left no food for you to eat
You cannibal, you meat-eater, you see
But I have seen the same
I know the shame in your defeat

But I will hold on hope
And I won't let you choke
On the noose around your neck

And I'll find strength in pain
And I will change my ways
I'll know my name as it's called again

Cause I have other things to fill my time
You take what is yours and I'll take mine
Now let me at the truth
Which will refresh my broken mind

So tie me to a post and block my ears
I can see widows and orphans through my tears
I know my call despite my faults
And despite my growing fears

But I will hold on hope
And I won't let you choke
On the noose around your neck

And I'll find strength in pain
And I will change my ways
I'll know my name as it's called again

So come out of your cave walking on your hands
And see the world hanging upside down
You can understand dependence
When you know the maker's hand

So make your siren's call
And sing all you want
I will not hear what you have to say

Cause I need freedom now
And I need to know how
To live my life as it's meant to be

And I will hold on hope
And I won't let you choke
On the noose around your neck

And I'll find strength in pain
And I will change my ways
I'll know my name as it's called again

i think you're correct MH over the Mumford's rating, lets hope they are not 'one album wonders' and continue to improve.

as for Tenpole Tudor,i should have noticed the "adam ant/termite" thing LOL...must have had a memory lapse, McLaren had a hand in their origins also.

Like Sade's Soldier of Love, this has been on & off the Buy List countless times. Poor reviews, and a less than ecstatic assessment from Music Head a year ago put me off, but several earworm tracks stuck with me from the promotional assault the "band" have mounted since release.

Finally, the plunge has been taken. I think this is actually a minor masterpiece. An ecological concept piece with a galaxy of guest stars (including Snoopy The Dog, De la Soul, Lou Reed, Bobby Womack, Mark E Smith, & Paul Simonon and Mick Jones from The Clash), the material on this album varies wildly between Hip-Hop, simple Pop, and Alternative Rock.

Loving this, and the song On Melancholy Hill is a classic Pop gem. The artwork on the sleeve by Jamie Hewlett is superb, and tells the "story" of the album in a series of wonderful images that characterise the "band's" visual signature.

The number 13 appears on the sleeve precisely 13 times (much of the recording was done at Manchester's Studio 13) !! Significant, I wonder ?!

AllMusic 3+/5 stars.
