U2 "war" 1983, vinyl/cassette. #1 UK, #9 AU, #12 US.

War was my intro to U2 when it was released.

I'd agree that they can be a patchy band, and don't think they deserve their global domination status, but War, and Achtung Baby are brilliant records IMHO.

THE Brit Punk album...

It's hard now to see why the establishment felt so threatened by this lot, but they certainly made some waves.

For all the nihilism expressed here, there's still an intelligence about the album which makes it stand out from what followed, and Steve Jones' guitars on Anarchy come close to epitomising Rock & Roll for me.

This album should be mandatory listening.

AllMusic 5/5 stars.

i absolutely love this album Tiggi, my dad who's 70 still gets around in 'pistols' and 'sid' t-shirts today, even though he was a teen in the old 1950s rock days he loves the Pistols...and my mum who's 64 loves Johnny Rotten and "PiL"

Think I went back and picked up this debut after getting the follow up. Wasn't nearly as impressed with this one. Just makes the like mark. No standouts and 3 I just don't like. Wish I had the original album cover. It was cooler. This was a highly praised debut album, so I think I'm in the minority on my opinion. Just don't think Faulkners voice here is up to par with at least the next 2 albums. Some of them here don't even sound like Faulkner, which is what I liked about the group. All I have are the first 3 albums. Doesn't even show that this hit the charts here in the states. Is that right?! Who's got a Joel Whitburn chart book out there? How did this fare in the land down under? Bueller, anyone?

I LIKE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - (Let's All) Turn On

Best Track - My Girl

Once a girl took my love until I couldn't give anymore,
Then I tried to pretend not to see what I couldn't ignore.
My girl don't love me at all
Anymore.

I took her to the dance and then I didn't see her all night.
Then a friend said he saw her with some other boy just outside.
When I went out she was alone.
She said, "I would like to go home"
I asked her, "Who were you with?"
She said, "No-one."
I could tell that she lied
(And a voice said inside)
My girl don't love me at all
Anymore.
Not at all.

1994 release from Grant Lee Phillips and his band.

Loved by critics, the band never really made any commercial waves, and Phillips went on to have a solo career which followed much the same path. Under-appreciated song-writing genius.

Picking out someone to compare this band with is no easy task, but I would say this album occupies some of the same territory as Ryan Adams, without sounding at all like him. Generally rich, warm & woozy country-tinged ballads combine with some excellent Grunge-Lite rock-outs.

AllMusic 4+/5 stars.

I'm convinced some of you may quite like stuff, so have included some vid clips:

Been listening to this debut solo album 'An Open Letter To The Scene' from Walter Schreifels who is the former frontman of post-hardcore bands Quicksand and Rival Schools, the latter of which are brilliant (check out an album called 'United By Fate').

Much different pop/folk/light rock style to his previous material in aforementioned bands and should fit in nicely alongside the previous Grant Lee Buffalo material.
