What Are You Listening To?
SteveO Wrote:I must say I enjoy the PHISH saga of covering whole albums.

Response to Tiggi's comment on the 16 cd set they released way back. Sorry for getting off track !

It's not a 16-CD set, it's 16 volumes of live material, consisting of 3 or 4 discs per set...

There are four sets which include the full album covers shows.

All good stuff.

Sorry I didn't remember the "16" reference correctly. Just enforces my favorable opinion on cover albums in a previous thread.

OASIS "(what's the story) morning glory?" 1995,cd. #1 UK, #4 US, #1 AU

in 1988ish i had totally given up on music...Style Council were releasing crap,Macca was going downhill,Costello was becoming boring and Kylie Minogue was getting #1 hits every time she released a single and radio was flooded with Stock,Aitken & Waterman produced crap! im pretty sure i didnt buy many albums between then and 1992 when Weller released his debut album.....but then in 1995 Oasis rekindled my interest in music with this brilliant album along with Blur,Weller's "stanley road",Alanis Morissette's "jagged little pill".

i didnt really like the debut album by Oasis and still dont. but this one blew me out of the water, guitars, ballads, acoustcs,Beatles rip-offs in "dont look back in anger" and the epic rock masterpiece "champagne supernova"...which i later found out Paul Weller played lead guitar on.
both Gallagher's vocals were brilliant and their songs had the knack of getting stuck in my head for weeks on end, the simplistic singalong tune "wonderwall" was the only real worldwide hit they ever had...and they piched that title from the George Harrison made movie of the same name.
both Noel and Laim Gallagher here high on Coke during the making of this one and neither can remember recording it, maybe they should have stayed on drugs, because they started to clean their act up after this one and nothing since has come close to this album.
unfortunately they will be remembered more for their tantrumsand foul language instead of their music!

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

worst track: hello (only because they nicked a couple of lines from Gary Glitter for the song...and i dont like GG since his convictions)

Don't Look Back In Anger probably my all time favorite Oasis

Reply
it was a tough call between that and the one that got "best track".
Noel sung a lot more frequently over the following albums and his tracks always come out as my faves on those albums, his voice has got better and Liam's has got worse IMO
Noel actually pinched the piano parts for Dont Look Back In Anger from Lennon's "imagine"

I needed a great album today. I got it with this fifth release from Andy and the boys. Another pleasant break from what was popular in the era. The british invasion continued it's run with me. XTC was formed in 1976 by Andy Partridge and Colin Moulding. The rest would come later. Signed by Virgin in '78 the band had a greater impact in the U.K, than here, as this one only made it to #48 with the spectacular track of Senses Working Overtime not even touching the top 40. Love a total of 5 tracks on here making it a LOVE album. XTC was not a band that enjoyed performing live with Andy having some stage fright issues, refusing to go on at their U.S. debut in California on the release of this album. Their appearance was canceled (due to illness) and the band would never play another live gig. Cool story. The last I heard from these guys was the '92 Nonsuch release, but I see they've had 2 more. Anybody have those? any good? Damn it, I feel cheated. While researching this I see this was originally a double album in the U.K. and was released as a single album here, which of course is what I have. Missing 5 tracks from the U.K. version.

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - Jason And The Argonauts

Best Track - Senses Working Overtime

Hey, hey,
The clouds are whey.
There's straw for the donkeys,
And the innocents can all sleep safely,
All sleep safely.

My, my,
Sun is pie.
There's fodder for the cannons,
And the guilty ones can all sleep safely,
All sleep safely.

And all the world is football-shaped
It's just for me to kick in space
And I can see, hear, smell, touch, taste
And I've got one, two, three, four, five
Senses working overtime
Trying to take this all in.
I've got one, two, three, four, five
Senses working overtime
Trying to taste the difference
'Tween a lemon and a lime
Pain and the pleasure
And the church bells softly chime.

Hey hey,
Night fights day.
There's food for the thinkers,
And the innocents can all live slowly,
All live slowly.
My, my,
The sky will cry
Jewels for the thirsty,
And the guilty one's can all die slowly ,
All die slowly.

And all the world is biscuit-shaped,
It's just for me to feed my face,
And I can see, hear, smell, touch, taste,
And I've got one, two, three, four, five,
Senses working overtime
Trying to take this all in.
I've got one, two, three, four, five,
Senses working overtime
Trying to taste the difference,
'Tween a lemon and a lime,
Pain and the pleasure,
And the church bells softly chime,

And birds might fall from black skies,
And bullies might give you black eyes,
And busses might skid on black ice,
But to me it's very, very beautiful ˇ
(England's glory!)
Beautiful ˇ
(A striking beauty!)

And all the world is football-shaped,
It's just for me to kick in space,
And I can see, hear, smell, touch, taste,
And I've got one, two, three, four, five,
Senses working overtime
Trying to take this all in
I've got one, two, three, four, five
Senses working overtime
Trying to tell the difference
'Tween the goods and grime
Turds and treasure
And there's one, two, three, four, five
Senses working overtime
Trying to take this all in
I've got one, two, three, four, five
Senses working overtime
Trying to taste the difference
'Tween a lemon and a lime
Pain and the pleasure,
And the church bells softly chime.

FB's fifth, from 1998.

Frank is one of the towering figures of US Alternative music IMV. This one proudly proclaims of itself "Recorded direct to two-track, with no edits" or something like that. I tend to like live-in-the-studio recordings, and this one conveys a good live feel.

Pretty standard FB fare, although the AllMusic review is pretty scathing. What do they know ??

Very good album.

AllMusic 2+/5 stars.

Randy's fourth album and the one that brought him commercial success, Intended to be a concept album about a redneck in the deep south. The deep south theme is maintained. The succes probably came from the controversy surrounding the leadoff track of Rednecks. Randy was good at satire. Some just don't get it. Actual events with real life characters scattered throughout this album. Ry Cooder plays on most of these with the Eagles, Frey, Henley, and Leadon showing up for background vocals on Everyman A King (a Huey Long composition), which happens to be at the bottom of my list . My favorite is a track called A Wedding In Cherokee County. Other great tracks are Rednecks, Birmingham, and Louisiana 1927. All classics, but for some reason that Wedding thing stood out for me this listen. Just misses the love mark and a close call. The album made it to #36 on the Billboard charts with no charting singles. Felt like I was watching Monk.

Best Track - A Wedding In Cherokee County

There she is sitting there
Out behind the smoke-house in her rocking chair
She don't do nothin'
She don't say nothin'
She don't feel nothin'
She don't know nothin'
Maybe she's crazy, I don't know
But maybe that's why I love her so

Her papa was a midget
Her mama was a whore
Her grandad was a newsboy 'til he was eighty-four
Man don't you think I know she hates me
Man don't you think I know that she's no good
If she knew how she'd be unfaithful to me
I think she'd kill me if she could
Maybe she's crazy I don't know
But maybe that's why I love her so

I'm not afraid of the greywolf
Who stalks through our forest at dawn
As long as I have her beside me
I have the strength to carry on

Today we will be married
And all the freaks that she knows will be there
And all the people from the village will be there
To congratulate us
I will carry her across the threshold
I will make dim the light
I will attempt to spend my love within her
But though I try with all my might
She will laugh at my mighty sword
She will laugh at my mighty sword
Why must everybody laugh at my mighty sword?
Lord, hep me if you will
Maybe we're both crazy, I don't know
Maybe that's why I love her so

The grand finale with the groups eighth album. Pretty good timing I think. Truth is they were starting to get stale for me. Maybe a little heavy on the synth. This one still passes the test as far as a good album. Title track and More Than This were my top tracks with India and Tara at the bottom. The album was a #1 in the homeland but could only manage #53 here. Both singles of More Than This and Avalon were top ten hits in England, but a bombs here. The album got rave reviews from the critics which I'm not sure were justified, at least in comparison to the groups early work. I was glad to hear Brian was going solo after this album, as I thought Roxy had run it's course.

Now the party's over
I'm so tired
Then I see you coming
Out of nowhere
Much communication in a motion
Without conversation or a notion
Avalon
When the samba takes you
Out of nowhere
And the background's fading
Out of focus
Yes the picture changing
Every moment
And your destination
You don't know it
Avalon
When you bossa nova
There's no holding
Would you have me dancing
Out of nowhere
Avalon
