Crowded House

CROWDED HOUSE "time on earth" 2007.

a full fourteen years has past between 'together alone' and this one,
amongst various solo projects came the sad death of drummer Paul Hester in march '05, he committed suicide by hanging himself in a Melbourne park unable to cope with the chronic depression that plagued him for much of his life, yet Hester was always outgoing and flambouyant in public. RIP PH.
Crowded House had reformed several times over those years, mainly for benifit shows and Hester was there till the end, everyone on the band knew of his 'demons' but it never affected the way he handled himself when a part of it.
this album started off as a Neil solo set but quickly evolved into a Crowded House album even though the themes and music are quite sombre.the only track that is upbeat both in music and lyrics is "people are like suns", unfortunately its the final track.
track three is upbeat musically, but subject matter of PH's death is quite dark...gotta love Finn's falsetto vocals in the chorus!!
three tracks here(#'s 1,3,10) deal with the death of Hester, track 9 was co-written with the Dixie Chicks...
only real issue i have with this one is that i think it is probably three tracks too long for my liking with the dark subject matter!
another very good album from Neil and the gang IMO

I LOVE THIS ALBUM!

That's really sad to hear about the drummer's suicide as I didn't know about it til now. RIP Paul...

As for this album, I had intended to buy it at time of release but never got round to it so have only heard 'She Called Up' which is ok.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the 'Intriguer' album Lloyd!

"she called up" is probably the easiest track to like on the album Lewis, and the most CH sounding song,

theres not really much to say about Intiguer other than it is a reasonable effort...personally i would have prefered them to call it day after Together Alone and leave it at that...but thats purely my opinion!

CROWDED HOUSE "intriguer" 2010.

this one isnt quite as good as the last one, only because the tracks were written with The House in mind, rather than a Finn solo set.
lyrically it is still quite dark and forbodding in places but musically it sounds like crowded House, only without the sparkle of the earlier recordings.
not sure of the title though as there is not much intriguering going on, sounds like a run of the mill collection of songs, there are two really good songs on this collection though, Amsterdam & Falling Dove(a lovely folky tune).
not a good starting point to discover Crowded House.

there are a couple of Crowded House compilations on the market now, but the first one(pictured below and reviewed on pg1) is by far the best to get!

CROWDED HOUSE "recurring dream-the best of CH"

as far as 'live' albums and dvd's go, there is really no other choice but to get their "warewell to the world" cd/dvd recorded at their 1996 live gig on the steps of the Sydney Opera House in front of 200,000 people...
it is Crowded House at their greatest moment, singing all the hits, and the atmosphere is electric.

i know so far that there hasnt really been a bad review of Split Enz or Crowded House material, and although a big fan of these guys in am being honest in my overviews.
these two bands ARE/WERE two of the greatest bands in terms of songwriting, originality, and general musicianship skills that have ever been recorded...in their particular genres(did i say genre?)
and im pretty sure some of the Tim and Neil solo material overviews will not delight even me!!!

you have to get Together Alone. I don't really like anything other than that one, but that record is brilliant. If I had some rating system that went from 1 to 10, it would get a 10, no doubt about it. Together Alone embodies the term "underrated" in music

OK,

I've downloaded it onto my enormous list of albums to review.

Thanks Matthew.

Always thought that CH (That's Crowded House - not Crazy Horse by the way!) was the closest thing to a band that sounded like The Beatles. Brilliant songwriting.

CROWDED HOUSE "temple of low men" 1988.

the followup to the hugely commercial sounding self-titled set.
this one is the most un-commercial sounding album with Neil Finn in over a decade. and possibly his most darkest set of songs ever.
the subject matter deals with infidelity, jealousy, greed, control and all the bad things associated with relationships, even the albums title refers to men who will do anything for sex. i wouldnt say the subject matter is graphic but it is certainly confronting...so much so that when Neil's wife heard the album and more inparticular "into temptation" for the first time she was convinced he was having an affair!!!
this album does however contain quite possibly the best song Neil has ever written...the classic McCartney-esque "better be home soon", a simplistic acoustic track that reached #2 on the aussie charts.
Sister Madly is another strange one here, it just doesnt fit the album musically as its got a good upbeat jazz feel to it to liven up the album!
the music on the album is sweet layed back and mellow which is in total contrast to the lyrical content. and it is not one that is instantly likeable, but it does grow over repeated listenings to become one of the strongest collection of Neil Finn songs on one single album, very much like Neil Young's "tonights the night".
as a footnote, five tracks were lifted off this one as single releases(#'s 1,3,5,8,10).

I LOVE THIS ALBUM!

It really makes me sad to see the lack of love for "Together Alone". Every CH album absolutely pales in comparisson to that one

I absolutely love Crowded House, not just because I'm a Kiwi but they really were a fantastic bunch. I think my favourite album would be their self titled but the other albums are definitely worth having a copy of.
